Game 76; Home coming for Vigneault, NYR visit the Nucks!

koutsit

New York Rangers (42-30-4) @ Vancouver Canucks (34-31-11)

The Rangers are back in the business tonight as they continue their four game road trip in Vancouver with the game against the Canucks. This game gets a lot attention from the media and this time it isn’t because of the players. John Tortorella, former Rangers coach and Alain Vigneault, former coach of the Canucks, will meet for the second time this season. The Rangers defeated the Canucks 5-1 at Madison Square Garden earlier this year. The Blueshirts are coming off from big 5-0 win over the Edmonton Oilers and they’re about to clinch the playoff spot. The Canucks are doing everything they possibly can but they won’t make the playoffs this year – which is a huge disappointment for them. Henrik Lundqvist is back in the net and Mats Zuccarello is about to be the highest scoring Norwegian to ever play in the National Hockey League – he needs one point to pass another Norwegian legend Espen Knutsen. After tonight’s game, the Rangers will end the road trip in Colorado on Thursday night.

VAN:

I’m not sure if there will be any riots because of the horrible regular season but something needs to change in Vancouver before the next season. Judging by the local media, Tortorella won’t have the job for a long after the terrible first year with the team. The Nucks are just 5-4-1 in their last 10 the Sports Club Stats give them only 0,3% to make the playoffs this year. They have been an average home team and they have a chance to make that record look better, they will play 5 out of their last 6 at home. Daniel and Henrik Sedin are the point leaders of the team once again but this year they have scored just total of 24 goals. Eddie Lack is a promising young goaltender but he has had too much to carry on his shoulders this year.

NYR:

Despite that they were playing against one of the worst teams in the league, the Rangers played a good hockey on Sunday night in Edmonton. They got a few lucky bounces and breaks but overall the team responded well after a terrible game in Calgary. They played especially tight in their own end and executed their own chances well. Mats Zuccarello opened the scoring with his first goal since the outdoor games at Yankee Stadium with beautiful deflection. Rick Nash scored twice and Derick Brassard once in addition to another from Zuccarello, the Rangers rallied to 5-0 win. In the net Cam Talbot got his 3rd shutout of the season.

Although the possible home ice advantage in the playoffs is not sure yet, the Rangers have a good chance to got it. They have an “easy schedule” compared to the Flyers and if they can keep playing good hockey – the playoffs would start at the Garden. The Rangers are a very good road team (tied 1st in the NHL) so there isn’t any reason why they can’t start the post season on the road. It takes 16 wins to get your hands to the Stanley Cup – they don’t count how many you win at home or on the road.

Game 76; Talbot in the net, Rangers visit the Oilers!

moore

New York Rangers (41-30-4) @ Edmonton Oilers (26-39-4)

The Rangers are back in the action tonight when they continue their four game road trip in Edmonton against the Oilers. The Blueshirts’ five game winning streak came to it’s end on Friday night in Calgary as the Flames beat the Rangers 4-3. Derek Dorsett, Raphael Diaz and Brad Richards scored three goals in just five minutes but despite of that the Rangers weren’t able to get any points. Cam Talbot gets the start tonight (his first since the Feb 27th vs. the Blackhawks) and “Goalbuster” is ready to stop the pucks once again. By surprise the Oilers won’t make the playoffs but as the Flames showed – that doesn’t mean anything. They have been playing good hockey lately and they’re coming off from big win over the Anaheim Ducks. The Oilers line-up is full of skilled youngsters but once again that skill hasn’t been transferred into the standings. After tonight’s game, the Rangers will head to Vancouver where they will meet the Canucks and John Tortorella.

EDM:

Another hockey season, another disappointment for the Edmonton Oilers. With new head coach Dallas Eakins, the Oilers had high hopes about this season. They are the last team in the West with record of 26-39-4 and there isn’t a much to do in the last 7-8 games. Ben Scrivens came to Edmonton in the middle of the season and he has been one of the best players in the team after that. The Oilers won’t play anymore games in the East and they will end the season with four game home stand. Eakins has a lot of thinking to do before the start of the next season but he sure has some promising young players in his line-up. Jordan Eberle, Taylor Hall, Ryan Nugent Hopkins – you name it. The Oilers fans are getting tired to these early exits, they wanna get back to winning.

NYR:

If you play just five minutes of good hockey, you won’t win a lot of hockey games. The Rangers weren’t able to continue their winning streak in Calgary as the Flames rallied to 4-3 win at their home arena. The Flames scored early power play goal and the Captain Mark Giordano made it 2-0 with beautiful wrist shot. Once again, the Rangers played a very good second period as they scored three goals in the span of 5 minutes. Raphael Diaz got his first goals as a New York Ranger and Brad Richards scored one after a long break. A few defensive mistakes made the Rangers pay and eventually Mike Cammalleri scored the game winner with just 7 seconds left in the second period.

A quick turnaround would be nice for the Rangers tonight in Edmonton. Head coach Alain Vigneault made a few changes to the line-up as JT Miller won’t play tonight. Dan Carcillo will take his spot in the line-up and he skates with Rick Nash and Derek Stepan. As said, Cam Talbot will get a start tonight as Lundqvist gets well deserved rest. Martin St. Louis is still without the goals in his first 14 games with the Rangers and tonight would be a good time to get the first one.

Game 54; Rangers and Devils set to meet in the historical outdoor game at Yankee Stadium!

stadium

New York Rangers (27-23-3) @ New Jersey Devils (22-19-11)

The Rangers are back in the action tonight as they face the New Jersey Devils at Yankee Stadium in the part of the NHL Stadium Series. For players, coaches and for the fans – this game is something out of ordinary. 50 000 people in the stands will see the 1st ever hockey to be played on the Yankee Stadium tonight. The Rangers are coming off from 2-1 loss against the St. Louis Blues so they wanna get back to winning as soon as possible. The Hudson River Rivalry has been intense since the Devils entered the league in 1982. Mark Messier’s guarantee and Stephen Matteau’s OT goal in 1994 playoffs, Devils sweep in 2006 playoffs, John Tortorella vs. Pete DeBoer matches and 2012 ECF. These teams don’t like each other, the fans don’t like each other and that’s what makes this rivalry so great to watch. Henrik Lundqvist and Martin Brodeur will once again play against each others and if the history repeats itself – there won’t be a lot of goals. After today’s game, the Rangers will face the Islanders on Wednesday night.

NJD:

The Devils have won 86 games against the Rangers since the first meeting in 1982. If they can win today in Yankee Stadium, that would definitely be one of the greatest win in their franchise history. It’s hard to believe but Martin Brodeur, who already played in 1994 playoffs, will get a start tonight against Henrik Lundqvist. 41-year-old Brodeur will play his 1452nd NHL game today afternoon in Bronx. Another veteran who will play his 2nd outdoor game in two years is Jaromir Jagr. 41-year-old Czech played for the Flyers in Winter Classic but he was injured in the first period and left the game early. Now Jagr is healthy and he’s ready to help the Devils win their first outdoor game.

NYR:

What ever happens, the fans will remember these next two games for long time. In 2012, the Rangers visited the Flyers in the NHL’s Winter Classic. Mike Rupp scored two goals and Brad Richards scored the eventual game winner in the 3rd period. Henrik Lundqvist secured the Rangers win as he stopped Danny Briere’s penalty shot with under minute remaining in the game. The Rangers haven’t won a game against the Devils this year but if they can do it today – everyone will be happy. Carl Hagelin will play his 3rd outdoor game today and he’s one of the key players for the Rangers. Line featuring Zuccarello, Brassard and Pouliot has been good for the Rangers and with their speed they can cause problems for the Devils defense. This is just me but keep eye on Brad Richards. He knows how to win outdoor games.

Rangers fans in the stands, be safe, be warm and most importantly BE LOUD!

PS, Happy Birthday to #99!

Game 28; The Rangers open up December as they host the Jets!

(February 25, 2013 – Source: Al Bello/Getty Images North America)

Winnipeg Jets (12-12-4) @ New York Rangers (14-13-0)

The Rangers start up December tonight as they host the Winnipeg Jets at the Garden. The Rangers are coming off from big 5-2 win over the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday afternoon while the Jets have had a couple days off after they lost 2-1 to the Philadelphia Flyers on Friday afternoon. The Jets lost Evander Kane in the last game and his status is “uncertain” for tonight’s game. Cam Talbot won his first start at the Garden on Saturday and it’s interesting to see if he gets the second start in row. After tonight’s game, the Rangers will play their final road game before the Christmas on Friday against the Buffalo Sabres. After that they’ll play the next 9 games at Madison Square Garden.

WPG:

Right now the Jets are 12th in the Western Conference with 28 points – the Rangers are 8th in the East with same amount of points. So it isn’t easier for the Jets this season even though they are travelling way less than year ago. As said, the Jets might be without Evander Kane tonight but that doesn’t mean they don’t have enough quality forwards to challenge the Rangers. Bryan Little (12+13) and Andrew Ladd (7+13) have been their best forwards so far. Dustin Byfuglien as always is putting up big points and he has 6 goals and 15 assists this year. Ondrej Pavelec is their number one goaltender and one of the candidates for Team Czech in Sochi.

NYR:

After a sloppy performance in Boston, did the Rangers give one damn good show at the Garden on Saturday! Old boss, John Tortorella was back in town and you could have expected that something unusual was going to happen. Well, one thing wasn’t unusual – Cam Talbot continued his winning streak and he’s now 6-1-0 in his 7 NHL starts. What was unusual? The Rangers offense really stood up and finally the power play worked at the Garden. Chris Kreider, who was sent to the AHL several times by Tortorella last season, scored his first career hat-trick in front of his old boss and seemingly that meant a lot for him. Michael Del Zotto and Rick Nash also scored for the Rangers and they rolled to 5-2 win over the Canucks.

After a pretty big weekend, the Rangers are now facing the most important month of the season. They will play a total of 14 games in December, 10 at MSG and just 4 on the road. If the Rangers can go 6-3 or 7-2 that home stand, that would be terrific. If the team stays healthy, they can win a lot of games on their home ice.

Game 7; Great moments are born from great opportunities, And that’s what you have here tonight, boys! #NYRBELIVE

TEAMS

New York Rangers @ Washington Capitals, Game 7 of the EC Quarterfinals

The Rangers and the Capitals will close-up their series tonight with the Game 7 at the Verizon Center. The both teams are familiar with the Game 7’s. The Rangers won two last year including one against the Caps while the Caps won one against the Bruins last year. The Rangers are 5-5 and the Caps 3-8 in the Game 7’s all time. But the truth is that you can forget the stats, every Game 7 is different. You need to play it like it’s your last game, take one shift at the time and somehow number of players will step up their game and lead the way. Game 7 – Hockey Heaven.

WSH:

This Capitals team is getting tired. They are taking stupid penalties, lose face-offs more often and they don’t generate that many scoring changes. That’s a spot the Rangers need to strike on. Play physical game and keep you skates going! Without a doubt, Braden Holtby played his best game of the series yesterday and he’s the most important Caps player on the ice. If the Caps get power plays, they are tough team to beat. Little mistakes can cost so much tonight and they all know that.

NYR:

Henrik Lundqvist saved all 27 shots last night and he got his 7th career post season shutout. But most of all he gave the Rangers a chance to win the series in the seven games. Again the Rangers were 0-for-5 on the power play and from time to time they were outplayed by the Capitals but they had chances. And this time they got the job done. Derick Brassard’s goals was eventually the game winner and the Rangers forced this series back to DC for one last showdown.

They did it last year so why they can’t do it this year? Will Nash show up tonight? What about the 4th line with Richards and Kreider? Can Hank steal another one in-a-row? So many questions to ask and think. One pass, one shift, one hit and one period at the time. Boys, you know how to do it!

Key players and stats:

In these types of games you wanna big effort from your big guys. Obviously, the Rangers can rely on Henrik Lundqvist. Without him… we wouldn’t be here. Rick Nash said he loves being under pressure and he usually plays very well then. Well it haven’t been quite that way but oh boy he has change to turn things up tonight. Derick Brassard is currently the Rangers best forward and you can see it from the scoreboard. 2+5 in the 6 games and he’s not slowind down. For the Caps, they pray that Alex Ovetchkin will end his scoring slump tonight. With Girardi and McD always on the ice with him, that seems to be a tough one for him. Braden Holtby played very well in the Game 6 and he will give his team a chance to win tonight.

I don’t care about the other stats but this one is promising: “John Tortorella is 4-1 in the Game 7’s in his career.

Let’s GO RANGERS!

Rangers vs. Caps: Special Teams and Goalies Preview

Lundqvist Ovechkin Stare DownWelcome to the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Round One!  Two teams that finished up the month of April red hot.   The Blueshirts put together a couple of runs and the Caps shut Millbury up after he had left them for dead mid-season.   Is one of these teams on the miracle run to the cup like the Kings were in 2012?  Let’s take a look at the special teams’ stats for both in preparation for what looks like a GREAT first round of hockey.

Power Play
Climbing from the basement of the league, the Rangers power play really started to show signs of being effective in the final eight games.  The puck rotation and zone time improved VASTLY from the 30th ranked unit of the first month of the season.  You remember the one?  The same one twitterverse had sighed. “oh no, can’t we refuse it?” when opponents ended up in the penalty box.

The Blueshirts finished 24th in the NHL on the power play with 24 goals on 153 opportunities and 5 shorties.  That resulted in a 15.7% average.  Ryan Callahan led the Rangers with 6 power play goals, followed by Derek Stepan at 4 and Nash and Richards tied with 3 apiece.

The Capitals finished 1st overall in the league with 44 goals on 164 opportunities and 3 short-handed.   The Ovi led onslaught yielded a 26.8 percentage.  Top scorers were Alexander Ovechkin at 16, Troy Brouwer with 7 and Mike Ribeiro with 6.  For the Rangers to turn the special teams in its favor, it’s obvious – shut down the Rocket Richard Trophy winner, especially on the man advantage.

Likely Power Play Lines:

Rangers
1st line: Nash, Richards, Callahan – Point: Stepan & Girardi
2nd line: Zuccarello, Brussard, Clowe – Point: Moore & Delzotto

Capitals
1st line: Ovechkin, Backstrom, Ribeiro – Point: Brouwer & Green
2nd line: Erat, Johansson, Fehr – Point: Alzner  & Carlson

Penalty Kill
The top and the bottom PK units are typically around 10% points of separation.  Since most power play goals are garbage goals worked in the front of the net and more attributed to traffic and sight lines, this is typically a misleading category for statistical analysis.   The top penalty killers on any unit are the goalie and the grinders clearing the boards down low.  Consistency is of course key in how the unit clears as well.  Some teams look for that stretch pass that leads to short-handed opportunities, others just clear the zone.  The Rangers all season have been a zone clearing team on the kill.  It’s important to remain that way when facing the number one power play in the NHL.  Don’t get cute with the puck, clear it and let the Caps chase, thus eating the clock.

So, since I completely invalidated any significance to PK stats with my own summary, I’ll throw them out there anyway.  As a numbers guy, I know there are other fans like myself who want them anyway.

The New York Rangers ended  15th in the NHL with an 81.8 penalty kill percentage, yielding  28 power play goals while netting 4 shorties.  Penalty in Minutes leaders were Arron Asham with  50
and Stu Bickel one minute off with 49.

As for the Caps, they placed 27th in the league, 77.9 percent on the kill giving up 36 goals and scoring 4 short-handed.  Matt Hendricks had 74 minutes and Mike Riberiro 53 in the box leading all Capitals.

Likely Penalty Kill lines:

Rangers
1st line: Callahan, Stepan, McDonagh, Girardi
2nd line: Nash/Hags, Powe, Delzotto, Stralman

Capitals
1st line:  Laich, Brouwer, Alzner, Carlson
2nd line: Backstrom, Ovechkin, Erskine, Green

Goalies
Knowing Tort’s goalie playing time allocation, if you look at King Henrik’s games played compared to Braden Holtby’s, you would think they were reversed.  Lundqvist was in the net 89% of the games this season compared to Holtby’s 75%.  In the past two seasons, Tortorella has split the playing time of his Vezina Award winning goalie to around 72% with Marty Biron.  Of course this was so that the King had fresh legs when the playoffs rolled around, but in a shortened season, no team has that luxury.  Whatever Tort’s philosophy shift, it has worked.  Lundqvist’s performance between the pipes in the past month of the season has been spectacular.  Holtby with only one less win has been pretty solid as well.

King Henrik played 43 games with a .926 save percentage and a GAA of 2.05.  His record was 24-16-3.  Marty Biron was solid in his 6 starts with a .917 save percentage, 2.32 GAA and record of 2-2-1.

For the Caps, Braden Holtby’s record was 23-12-1, .920 save percentage and a GAA of 2.58 in his 36 games played.  His counterpart, Michal Neuvirth played 13 games with a 4-5-2 record with a GAA of 2.74 and a .910 save percentage.

Okay now, let’s drop the puck in the first faceoff towards Lord Stanley’s hardware.

Game 34; Can the Rangers break “the curse of the Bell Centre”?

(Graham Hughes/THE CANADIAN PRESS)

(Graham Hughes/THE CANADIAN PRESS)

New York Rangers (16-14-3) @ Montreal Canadiens (21-7-5)

The Rangers continue their 3 game roadtrip tonight when they visit the Canadiens at the Bell Centre. The Canadiens are coming off from great shootout win over their division rival Boston Bruins. The Rangers found their offense in Philly but couldn’t found it in Ottawa. and they were beaten 3-0 by the Senators. Montreal has been the horror house for the Rangers during the last few years and tonight’s game won’t be any easier! The Rangers and the Canadiens!

MON:

The Canadiens have won 8 out of their 13 games in March. With two losses coming against the Penguins, the Canadiens have played great month of March. They are currently at the 2nd place in the conference with 7 points behind the leading Penguins. They are just one point ahead of the Bruins, so the race for the division is still on. Carey Price have been playing well lately and their offense is rolling. The Canadiens will play next 5 out of their next 6 games on their home ice. Jeff Halpern, who was placed in the waiwers by the Rangers and claimed by the Canadiens, will meet his former team tonight.

NYR:

At this stage of the season, your special teams needs to get it done. The Rangers didn’t capitalize on their 4 PP chances and they gave up a powerplay goal for the Senators. After a great win in Philly, the team looked kind of lost again. Andre Benoit started the scoring for the Senators with a PP goal in the 2nd period. The Rangers had a few changes to tie the game but the Senators used their chances better. Guillame Latendresse buried one past Henrik Lundqvist and the game was over. Colin Greening’s empty netter just added more pain for the Rangers.

After a loss, the Rangers head coach John Tortorella made some changes to the line-up. Mats Zuccarello will make his season debut against the Canadiens. He’s the last player to score on Carey Price in Montreal! No word who’s gonna sit but my guess is Pyatt or Newbury. Martin Biron will get his 5th start of the season tonight. Marian Gaborik skated in the 4th line in the practice and it’s apparent that he needs step up his game.

Key players and stats:

Last game was 4th time this season when the opponent held the Rangers out of the scoreboard. That’s not a surprise with the fact that the Rangers have scored the least goals in the whole league (75). Tonight’s opponent, the Canadiens have scored 101 goals this season. Tomas Plekanec has 12 goals while D PK Subban, Brian Gionta and rookie Brendan Gallagher each have 10 goals in the season. For the Rangers, they have two 10-goal scorers; Rick Nash (12) and Derek Stepan (10). This is the last meeting in the regular season and with the win tonight, the Canadiens would sweep the season series.

Game 26; Time for another pay back!

JOHN WOODS/AP

JOHN WOODS/AP

New York Rangers (13-10-2) @ Winnipeg Jets (13-11-2)

The Rangers will continue their season high four game roadtrip as they face the Winnipeg Jets tonight. The Jets won the first meeting of the season 4-3 at the Garden so the Rangers are looking for the pay back. There is only one point difference between the Rangers and the Jets in the standings. So there are two extremely valuable points available in the game tonight. Both teams are in the need of those, this one should be a good one !

WPG:

The Jets have played good lately and they have won 8 out of their last 12 games. With just one point away from the playoffs spot they are in the tight playoff race. Evander Kane and Blake Wheeler have been playing well and over all their offense has been good this season. With bad penalty kill, there’s isn’t a point taking too many penalties. Ondrej Pavelec has also been playing well lately. The Jets are a fast team with good offensive players. They are coming off from the 5-2 home win against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

NYR:

Penalties cost the game for the Rangers on Tuesday when they were beaten by the Buffalo Sabres 3-1. The Rangers did start scoring after a great play by Derek Stepan and Ryan Callahan. Goal was scored shorthanded and it was 5th shorthanded goal surrended by the Sabres this season (most in the league). Not long after that, the Sabres tied the game with Marcus Foligno’s goal. Jason Pominville’s perfect pass found Thomas Vanek and he didn’t miss a breakaway chance. The Rangers got some power play time in the 3rd period but the Sabres used their own chances well. Foligno’s 2nd of the night secured the Sabres win.

The Rangers are playing very good hockey – time to time but overall they are playing too unevenly. Good news is that usually after a very bad game, the Rangers will find a way to win the next one. John Tortorella changed the offensive lines during the game as he was looking for the offense but don’t think those lines will last. Henrik Lundqvist played a good game but there’s a chance that Martin Biron plays tonight and Lundqvist will go against the Penguins on Saturday afternoon in Pittsburgh.

Key players and stats:

Derek Stepan continued his good game and he has 8 points in the last 7 games. Rick Nash’s goal- and point streak ended on Tuesday night. Blake Wheeler has 3 goals in his last 3 games for the Jets. The Rangers power play is ranked 23rd in the league while their PK is ranked 7th. The Jets PP is 27th and PK 26th. So the good special teams could be the Rangers key for winning tonight. This is the second of three meeting this season. The last meeting is on Apr. 1 at MSG.

A Tale of Two Units

Tampa Bay Lightning v New York Rangers

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…”  Pretty sure we don’t need Charles Dickens to tell the difference between the Rangers penalty kill and power play units.  One ranks at the bottom of the NHL, the other is one of the major reasons the Blueshirts have started playing more consistently.

Let’s talk power play first.  Being a puck addict, I watch as many games as time permits.  Lately, I have been watching the power play of top units, particularly the Pens, Blues and the Bolts.  What popped out at me wasn’t necessarily these teams’ power plays, but how other teams defended it.

Coach Torts’ mentioned after the New Jersey Devils’ loss, “”We have some guys playing tentative…careful…we don’t play careful hockey.”  This is exactly what I witnessed on how teams play the top three power plays in the league.  Tentative.  Teams sit back, guard lanes and don’t press.  They are almost afraid to get up on contact.

Now, watch how teams play the New York Rangers’ power play.  Opponents press, throw bodies, cause errant passes and scoring opportunities.  It is as if the shorthanded team is so NOT concerned with the Rangers scoring with a man advantage, their entire focus is causing an odd man rush up ice for a shorty.  Why?  Tentative.  There’s that word again.  Watching the Rangers power play, how many fans aren’t sitting on the edge of their seats HOPING the other team doesn’t score?  Pretty sure the opposition scouting has the same observation.

So what to do?  Back to the top three teams.  They all do unconventional things down low.  I’ll exemplify the Pens as living in Pittsburgh, I’m forced fed Root homer broadcasts and dole out a generous portion of Sindy love with every puck drop.  No one will ever convince me Bob Errey isn’t wearing #87 underoors under his well-tailored suits.  I digress.  One thing the Pens do is rotate Crosby and Malkin netfront.  Yes, their most effective set up is putting two of their snipers right in front of the net and rotate it from left to right, depending on which side of the ice the puck is cycling.  The free man who is leaving the net front moves behind the net and inverts the point, vintage Wayne Gretzky back in the early Edmonton Oilers days.  The point defenseman then collapses into the slot.  What does the PK do when this happens?  They become TENTATIVE as their assignments have all just scrambled and they can’t press.  They are forced to stay home and try to figure out where the shooting lanes are now as the entire set has now changed.

Since game one, I’ve been hoping to see what kind of opportunities would blow up if Rick Nash took the net front and drifted in and out with Cally in a similar rotation.  Especially with offensive zone control and consistent cycling getting the opposition penalty kill moving, goalie moving and unable to get fresh legs on the ice.  Puck on the net not to score, but to set up a quality scoring opportunity down low or yielding a nice juicy rebound.

I know, I yell “shoot the effing puck” as much as anyone.  Why if I am such a proponent of patience for the quality shot then?  Simple – the Rangers are tentative.  Again, that word.   Not only do they NOT pull the trigger on the shot, they hesitate when cycling as well – that is in the rare event they can get the puck back into the zone after a clear.  The results?  The opposition presses on the penalty kill, turnovers, and on a few shifts, more short-handed scoring opportunities yielded than shots on goal.  That will earn 29th place in the league with a 5/49 earning a 10.2% on the power play.

Now to the best of times: The Penalty Kill.  The addition of Darroll Powe has strengthened the unit as the guy simply hustles all over the zone.  As King Henrik seems to be settling back in to his Vezina form, the last line of defense on the kill just keeps getting better and better.  The shot blocking has returned to Rangers hockey.  Now if the Blueshirts can get that “too many men on the ice” thing worked out, we won’t be as reliant on the PK and can enjoy more of that stretch pass offense that is exciting to watch.

Finally, catching up from the past week, congrats to JT Miller for his first two NHL goals, Gabby for 2 Birthday points and Arron Asham for his first goal as a Ranger. That goal earned AA a pretty cool achievement of scoring a goal for every Atlantic Division team in his 14 seasons.  Speaking of Double A, who doesn’t love that Forth Line of Jeff Halpern, Arron Asham and Darroll Powe?  I’m sure someone wiser, with more wit than I, will come up with a cooler name for them, but I offer up: The Journeymen.

Remember: Hockey Day in America, Sunday, February 17th.

Go Rangers!

Game 7: Rangers and Pens meet at the Garden!

Pittsburgh Penguins (3-3-0) @ New York Rangers  (3-3-0)

With a shortened season it feels like we’re having rivalry match-ups day after another but who wouldn’t like those? Especially when it’s time for the revenge. The Rangers have a chance to make it three in-a-row when they meet the Penguins for the second time in the season. The Penguins ruined the Rangers home opener with 6-3 win at the Garden about a week ago. The Rangers home record is now 3-1-0.

PIT:

Starting the season with two wins,  things are getting tougher for the Penguins. They managed to beat the Senators in a shootout but they were defeated by the Islanders on Tuesday night. Last year’s top scorer Evgeni Malkin has “only” one goal and five assists but he’s also -3. With many teams just concentrating on Malkin and Crosby, they often forget James Neal. He has four goals in the season but like many others he’s -4. The Penguins will miss D Matt Niskanen for 2-4 weeks. He hurted his knee and left the game in Ottawa. The Penguins have only scored 4 goals in their last three games.

NYR:

Ryan Callahan scored the game-winner against the Flyers but he also left the game in third period. He injured his shoulder while wrestling with Maxime Talbot. Callahan went immediately to the locker room and seemingly he was in lot of pain. Good news is that he will miss only 10 to 14 days with left shoulder subluxation. Will they call up a player from Connecticut? Will Torts use Bickel as a forward again? What about Matt Gilroy? Many questions to which we get answers quite quickly. Hank had a solid game against the Flyers and I don’t see why he wouldn’t get 7th straight start. With that, I would see Biron playing against the Lightning on weekend.

Key players and stats:

Michael Del Zotto now has two goals and 4 assists in the season. He scored 10 goals in 77 games last season. Rick Nash has 26 shots in the season but only one goal. With Callahan out, Coach Tortorella, underlined  big role of Nash. He said that he’s not concerned about the fact that Nash only has one goal but praised his good physical play. Tomas Vokoun played in the teams first meeting but  I’m expecting to see Marc-Andre Fleury in the net for the Penguins. While the Penguins have had troubles with scoring – they are a dangerous team on power play. The Rangers need to avoid undisciplined penalties although their PK has been good over the last few games. The Penguins have won the last 5 meetings. Teams will meet again on Mar. 16 (@Pittsburgh), Apr. 3 (@MSG) and Apr. 5 (@Pittsburgh)

Let’s Go Rangers!
