Game 19; Healthy Rangers host the Lightning at the Garden

Tampa Bay Lightning (9-9-1) @ New York Rangers (8-8-2)

With just 19 games to the season, these teams have already met twice. The Rangers won 3-2 in the Tampa on Feb. 2 and they continued that with 5-1 win at the Garden on Feb. 10. Rick Nash has 3 goals in the season with two of them coming against the Lightning. Nash is presumably back, so can he continue scoring and help his team over the current slump? It’s the New York Rangers Game Day!

TBL:

Such as the Rangers, the Lighting is also in the losing streak. After a loss to the Penguins 5-3, the Sabres beat them 2-1 on Tuesday night. For the record, they are 1-6-0 against the Atlantic Division teams this year. Despite the team effort, Steven Stamkos is currently red hot. He has goals in six consecutive games and total of 14. This Tampa Bay team is all about the scoring but lately they have been surrending too much goals. Goalie Anders Lindbäck have played fairly good but his numbers aren’t that good (GAA 3,27 and SV% .890). If the Lightning gets their offense going, they’re hard team to beat.

NYR:

The Rangers and the Jets offered a wild game at the Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night. Unfortunately, the result didn’t satisfy the Rangers. The first period was even but the second was all about the Jets. Two quick goals by former Ranger Olli Jokinen and Evander Kane turned the game away. Captain Callahan got one but Jokinen answered quickly. When Taylor Pyatt redirected Anton Stralman’s shot to the net, it looked that the Rangers still would have a chance to get some points. Evander Kane didn’t agree with that and he scored his 2nd goal of the night with just 20 seconds after the Pyatt’s goal. And 53 seconds after that the Rangers answered back but they couldn’t tie the game.

With the four game losing streak, it’s legitimate to start worry. But on the bright side, Rick Nash and Ryan McDonagh will probably return to the line-up tonight. Expecting to see Lundqvist in the net. Don’t wanna say it loud – but it seems that tonight’s game is a must win. But as said, they have been winning against the Lightning lately. Continuing that would ease their pain and boost their confidence!

Key players and stats:

Steven Stamkos has 14 goals and 16 assists in the season. Rookie Cory Conacher already has 7 goals and 11 assists. Anton Stralman got his 3rd goal of the season in the last game. Brad Richards did get a point and now has 0+2 in the last five games. Marian Gaborik’s last goal is from Feb. 14 (NYI). The Rangers power play is ranked 30th in the league (TBL 7th) while their PK is ranked 10th (TBL 13th). This is the last meeting of the season.

Game 18; Another chance for the Rangers to start winning again!

(Fred Greenslade/Reuters)

(Fred Greenslade/Reuters)

Winnipeg Jets (8-9-1) @ New York Rangers (8-7-2)

The Rangers are back in business when they host the Winnipeg Jets tonight at the Garden. Tonight’s game will kick of season high four game home stand. Can the Rangers continue their four game winning streak against the Jets? What about Girardi and MDZ? We will find out – it’s the Rangers Gameday!

WPG:

The Jets are off to decent start to the season. They had some trouble with scoring early in the season but lately they have received offensive help from guys like Andrew Ladd and Evander Kane. Ladd has 10 goals while Kane has 7. Goalie Ondrej Pavelec hasn’t been bad but neither that great. But the Jets have still tough road ahead of them. Currently they’re at the 11th place in the Eastern Conference with 17 points. As we all know the playoff race is so tight this year that anything can happen. The Jets are 7 points from the 5th seed while just 4 points ahead of 13th team Florida. They’re coming off from 4-2 win against the Devils.

NYR:

After a good first period, the last game was all about the Canadiens. Goals from Erik Cole, Alex Galchenyuk and Lars Eller sealed the game for Montreal. For the Rangers, that wasn’t all. Ryan McDonagh got hit hard by Max Pacioretty and left the game immediately. After a replay you could certainly see that Pacioretty’s skates left the ice after the hit. However, Pacioretty didn’t get any suspension or fine. With just a couple of minutes remaining in the regulation time, Dan Girardi blocked PK Subban’s shot which hitted right to his ankle. Girardi left the game and couldn’t walk on his own.

On the bright side, Girardi didn’t broke his ankle and Michael Del Zotto and Darrel Powe are cleared to play tonight. There’s still no word on Aaron Asham or Rick Nash. Expecting to see Henrik Lundqvist in net tonight. Getting some key players back could be a relief to the Rangers. With long home stand they have chance to start winning again – on a regular basis!

Key players and stats:

The Rangers have scored 3 goals in the last three games. Good thing is that they have scored against the Jets lately (12 goals in last 4 games) with surrending only three goals in those games. The Jets power play is slightly better than the Rangers but their PK is worst in the league (69,0%). Andrew Ladd has 10 goals and 7 assists and leads the team in scoring. Injured Rick Nash leads the Rangers in the scoring with three goals and nine assists.

Game 17; Curse of Bell Centre

The Rangers will conclude their two game road trip tonight as they face the Montreal Canadiens in the Bell Centre. Just a few days ago teams met at the MSG and the Canadiens took the points with 3-1 win. Can the Rangers end the curse of Bell Centre and start winning again?

MON:

After the win against the Rangers, the Canadiens got just one point from the Islanders. They led the game 3-1 but Frans Nielsen tied it in the 3rd and Thomas Hickey scored the GWG in overtime for the Isles. Max Pacioretty scored two goals while Travis Moen had one.

NYR:

Already playing without Rick Nash, Darrel Powe and Aaron Asham, the Rangers got some unwanted news when Michael Del Zotto got hit hard in the 3rd period in the game against the Senators. Steve Eminger was called-up and probably will dress against the Canadiens. The Rangers also called-up Christian Thomas (2010 2nd round draft-pick, #40 overall) from the Whale.

The Rangers did get a point against the Senators but overall effort was pathetic. The Bell Center has been a bad nightmare for the Rangers during the last few years. Somehow they haven’t been able to get their game together in that building. It’s interesting to see if Martin Biron gets his 3rd start of the year because of Lundqvist’s record in Bell Centre.

The Rangers need to find a way to get points while they’re struggling with injuries.

Edited 2:22pm: Staal has flu (gametime decision) Asham out.

Key players and stats:

Christian Thomas will play his NHL debyt tonight. Biron’s record is 1-1-0 this season. Max Pacioretty has goals in three consecutive games. Brandon Prust is a gametime decision. This is the second meeting of the season. The last meeting is on Mar. 30.

For the record, this preview is pretty brief (Due to big competitions this weekend for me) but still LGR!

Game 16; It’s time for a another playoff rematch!

Richard Wolowicz/Getty Images North America)

Richard Wolowicz/Getty Images North America)

New York Rangers (8-6-1) @ Ottawa Senators (9-6-2)

These teams played 7 tough playoff games last spring against each other including the terrific “Game 7” at the Madison Square Garden. The Rangers advanced to the 2nd round while the Senators booked their vacations after that game. But enought with the past, both teams have some significant injuries to struggle with in tonight’s game. Can the Rangers end the Senators streak and get some valuable points to the standings? The Senators are definitely looking for a revenge – another tought night ahead!

OTT:

After a good start to the season, the Senators have been hit hard. First they lost Jason Spezza (back injury) and most recently they lost Erik Karlsson (achilles). Both players are probably out for a season. After falling 3-0 to Maple Leafs, the Senators are currently on the two game winning streak (NJD, NYI). Coach McLean has a lot of things to solve out after a significant losses. While Craig Anderson has been as good as last year – they desperately need more offense. Young Swedish Jakob Silfverberg and Mika Zibanejad have a great chance to prove what they can do.

NYR:

The Rangers had a big test in the game against Canadiens as they played without Rick Nash who was out with an undisclosed injury. Team announced that Nash won’t make a trip to Ottawa but may join the team in Montreal. Anton Stralman got his first goal of the season but that wasn’t enough. Max Pacioretty’s goal tied the game and Alex Galchenyuk’s was able to get a game winner. The Rangers gambled – but they didn’t get pay off. Raphael Diaz scored the empty-netter and the Canadiens increased their winning streak to five games.

Coach Tortorella admit that the Rangers could’t keep up the pace in the last game. He called it “one of the worst hockey games I’ve been involved in”.

Expecting to see Lundqvist getting the start against the Senators while Biron could get his 3rd start against the Habs. With Powe and Nash out, Kreider and Mashinter will be in the line-up.

Key players and stats:

With Spezza and Karlsson out, the Senators needs offensive help from guys like Daniel Alfredsson and Kyle Turris. They both have 4 goals in the season. Craig Anderson has been terrific in the net for the Senators (SV% .950). Carl Hagelin now has points in five consecutive games (career-high). The Rangers power(less) play is now 6-for-55 (10,6%). This is the first of three meetings this season. The Rangers will host the Senators on Mar. 8 and they’ll back in Ottawa on Mar. 28.

Game 15; Rangers trying to start another streak against the Habs

David Pokress/Newsday/MCT

David Pokress/Newsday/MCT

Montreal Canadiens (10-4-1) @ New York Rangers (8-5-1)

The Rangers will conclude their 3-game homestand as they host the Montreal Canadiens at the Garden. Both teams are hot at the moment. While the Rangers have got points from 8 out of their last 10 games, the Canadiens are currently on the four game winning streak. Can the Rangers continue their solid game and start another streak? We’ll find out – it’s the Original Six Night at the Garden! Following tonight’s game, the Rangers will head to two game road-trip.

MON:

The Canadiens have surprised everybody – including themselves. Last year they finished 15th in the Eastern with just 78 points. Now they are sitting at the 2nd place in the Eastern Conference with 21 points. Their goaltender Carey Price has been good but the most surprising thing has been their offense. 2012 1st round draft-pick (3rd overall) Alex Galchenyuk has 1 goal and 8 assists while other rookie Brendan Gallagher has already 5 goals in the season. But they also have received offensive help from their veterans. Tomas Plekanec has been terrific and so has been Andrei Markov (D) who has 4 PP-goals in the season.

NYR:

The Rangers showed what they can achieve when they stay patient. After a quick goal by the Capitals in 1st period, the Rangers dominated the game. They stayed calm, continued their forecheck and most of all they got shots to the net. After a great play by Rick Nash, Carl Hagelin redirected McDonagh’s shot from the point just pass Braden Holtby. Hard work finally paid off when Derek Stepan scored power play goal after a beautiful set-up by Richards, Nash and Del Zotto. With a great game from Lundqvist, the Rangers got what they wanted.

But they also got unfortunate news when Darrel Powe left the game after colliding with Matt Hendricks. After the game the Rangers put Powe on IR (concussion) and called-up Brandon Mashinter from the Whale.

Heading to this night’s game, the Rangers are on the 3-game winning streak against the Habs at the Garden. Expecting to see Lundvist in the net, who’s 13-9-2 in his career against the Montreal.

Key players and stats:

Carl Hagelin has points in four consecutive games (including career-high four game goal streak) like his linemate Rick Nash. The Rangers have scored power play goals in last two games (NYI,WSH). Canadiens D Raphael Diaz has 11 assists in the season. Gallagher (concussion), Price (flu) and Subban (flu) are game time decisions. Ex-Ranger Brandon Prust will play his first game in the MSG since joining the Canadiens. This is the first and only meeting at the MSG this season. The Rangers will be at Montreal on Feb. 23 and Mar. 30.

Game 14; Sunday Showdown in the Big Apple!

washington-capitals-v-york-rangers-20120507-193459-592

Washington Capitals (5-8-1) @ New York Rangers (7-5-1)

The Rangers and the Capitals will be in the spotlight when “Hockey weekend across America” will come to it’s end on Sunday night. This “new-age” rivalry is here to stay. Since 2008, the teams have met three times in the playoffs and most recently last spring, when the Rangers advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals. There’s always something special in the air when the Caps visit the Garden. For the Rangers – it’s time for start another winning streak!

WSH:

After a terrible start for the season the things are looking a little better for the Washington Capitals as they’re currently on the 3-game winning streak. The Caps will be at the Garden first time since they lost the “Game 7” against the Rangers on May 12th, 2012. Off season addition Mike Ribeiro and playoff “hero” (you could be hero in so many way!) Joel Ward have carried the teams offense. Nicklas Bäckström and Alex Ovetchkin has 6 goals in total. In addition to that, their goaltending hasn’t been on that same level as it was last spring. Braden Holtby has 4 wins in the season (GAA. 3.89 / SV% .877). But with the current winning streak, the Caps are definitely willing to fight for the valuable points!

NYR:

The Rangers and the Islanders provided a good Valentine’s Day show at the Garden on Thursday night and both teams got valuable points. Frans Nielsen and John Tavares guaranteed the win for the Isles in the shootout while both Nash and Gaborik failed on their attempts. After a strong start the Rangers found themselves trailing in the second period but the power play goal by Carl Hagelin saved the one point for the Rangers. The 3-game winning streak came to it’s end but the Rangers have got from 6 out of their last 8 games. Forcing games to overtime is vital – especially with this shortened season.

Carl Hagelin has been one of the best Ranger players in the recent games. With his great speed, he creates so many chances and space for other players. On the contrary Brad Richards had some tough time in the game against the Islanders and he was benched in the third period. After a game Richards told the media that “I’m just trying too much, need to relax and play more simply”.

After a couple days off, Henrik Lundqvist will get his 12th start of the season. He was 2-1-0 with a 3.00 GAA against the Caps in the 11-12 regular-season. JT Miller will play his 6th game of the season which means that he’s going to stay with the Rangers/Connecticut.

Key players and stats:

Carl Hagelin has goals in three consecutive games while his line mate Rick Nash has 4 points in those three games. Mike Ribeiro has 5 goals and 12 assists for the Capitals. Ex-Ranger Wojtek Wolski has 4 goals and 4 assists. This is the first of three meetings this season. The Rangers will be at the Washington Mar. 10 and the last meeting is on Mar. 24 at the Garden.

Whale Game Preview

The Whale look to win their 4th straight tonight as they host the Norfolk Admirals tonight at the XL Center at 7 PM. Connecticut (23-21-4-2) is coming off a 4-1 win last night against Portland thanks to a pair of goals by rookie Thomas and the game winner by Rangers prospect Mashinter. Norfolk (21-24-2-1) is coming off a 1-0 shutout last night in W/B Scranton, thanks the a 32 save performance of goalie Igor Bobkov and the game’s lone goal by Brayden Irwin.

Tensions flare after Christian Thomas' opening goal.

Tensions flare after Christian Thomas’ opening goal.

Last Night: Friday at the XL in Hartford the Whale defeated the Portland Pirates 4-1 before 4,441. After a dump in and hard hit on center Kelsey Tessier, rookie Christian Thomas was able to get the Whale on the board first after firing home his 12th of the season at 8:39 of the first. Michael Haley also was awarded an assist on that goal. Then at 11:40 of the first, Portland captain, Bolduc, buried his 18th of the year off a rebound. With just 1:50 to go in the opening period, Brandon Mashinter, scored a back-door goal that turned out to be the eventual game-winner, off a good pass from veteran, Kris Newbury. Veteran blueliner, Mike Vernace, also had an assist on the goal. That would turn out to be all the Whale would need to seal the W. The Whale also scored on a beautiful right wing side slapshot goal from Thomas, his second of the night. Defenseman Sam Klassen and Blake Parlett assisted on the goal. Then, after 2010 Rangers 1st round pick, Dylan McIlrath, was called for charging, center Kelsey Tessier, scored short-handed on a breakaway to make it 4-1 Whale from Michael Haley and Sam Klassen. That would be in and thanks to another increidible performance by goaltender, Cam Talbot (23 saves), the Whale secured the win.

Tonight: Tonight The Admirals and the Whale meet for the fourth time this season. CT has grabbed just one of the three, a 5-2 victory back on November 24, 2012 at home. Norfolk has been victorious in both decisions in Norfolk (5-4 OT win on Oct. 19, and a 6-3 win on Oct. 20).

Key Players To Watch:

Norfolk: Defenseman Sami Vatanen has 4 goals, 21 assists, in 37 games this season and is currently Norfolk’s top scorer.

Connecticut: Ranger 2010 2nd round pick Christian Thomas continued his hot streak last night with two goals (3 goals, 3 assists, in past 6 games). I’d expect yet again a big night tonight from the undersized rookie.

Injury Update: Ryan Bourque (Arm/wrist), Marek Hrivik (Concussion), Jason Wilson (undiscolesed), Benn Ferriero (undisclosed), all skated this morning with head coach, Ken Gernander, following the team’s practice. I’d expect Borque and Hrivik to both be out at least another week, but Ferriero and Wilson’s injuries were more recent so they could possibly be back as soon as tonight.

A Tale of Two Units

Tampa Bay Lightning v New York Rangers

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…”  Pretty sure we don’t need Charles Dickens to tell the difference between the Rangers penalty kill and power play units.  One ranks at the bottom of the NHL, the other is one of the major reasons the Blueshirts have started playing more consistently.

Let’s talk power play first.  Being a puck addict, I watch as many games as time permits.  Lately, I have been watching the power play of top units, particularly the Pens, Blues and the Bolts.  What popped out at me wasn’t necessarily these teams’ power plays, but how other teams defended it.

Coach Torts’ mentioned after the New Jersey Devils’ loss, “”We have some guys playing tentative…careful…we don’t play careful hockey.”  This is exactly what I witnessed on how teams play the top three power plays in the league.  Tentative.  Teams sit back, guard lanes and don’t press.  They are almost afraid to get up on contact.

Now, watch how teams play the New York Rangers’ power play.  Opponents press, throw bodies, cause errant passes and scoring opportunities.  It is as if the shorthanded team is so NOT concerned with the Rangers scoring with a man advantage, their entire focus is causing an odd man rush up ice for a shorty.  Why?  Tentative.  There’s that word again.  Watching the Rangers power play, how many fans aren’t sitting on the edge of their seats HOPING the other team doesn’t score?  Pretty sure the opposition scouting has the same observation.

So what to do?  Back to the top three teams.  They all do unconventional things down low.  I’ll exemplify the Pens as living in Pittsburgh, I’m forced fed Root homer broadcasts and dole out a generous portion of Sindy love with every puck drop.  No one will ever convince me Bob Errey isn’t wearing #87 underoors under his well-tailored suits.  I digress.  One thing the Pens do is rotate Crosby and Malkin netfront.  Yes, their most effective set up is putting two of their snipers right in front of the net and rotate it from left to right, depending on which side of the ice the puck is cycling.  The free man who is leaving the net front moves behind the net and inverts the point, vintage Wayne Gretzky back in the early Edmonton Oilers days.  The point defenseman then collapses into the slot.  What does the PK do when this happens?  They become TENTATIVE as their assignments have all just scrambled and they can’t press.  They are forced to stay home and try to figure out where the shooting lanes are now as the entire set has now changed.

Since game one, I’ve been hoping to see what kind of opportunities would blow up if Rick Nash took the net front and drifted in and out with Cally in a similar rotation.  Especially with offensive zone control and consistent cycling getting the opposition penalty kill moving, goalie moving and unable to get fresh legs on the ice.  Puck on the net not to score, but to set up a quality scoring opportunity down low or yielding a nice juicy rebound.

I know, I yell “shoot the effing puck” as much as anyone.  Why if I am such a proponent of patience for the quality shot then?  Simple – the Rangers are tentative.  Again, that word.   Not only do they NOT pull the trigger on the shot, they hesitate when cycling as well – that is in the rare event they can get the puck back into the zone after a clear.  The results?  The opposition presses on the penalty kill, turnovers, and on a few shifts, more short-handed scoring opportunities yielded than shots on goal.  That will earn 29th place in the league with a 5/49 earning a 10.2% on the power play.

Now to the best of times: The Penalty Kill.  The addition of Darroll Powe has strengthened the unit as the guy simply hustles all over the zone.  As King Henrik seems to be settling back in to his Vezina form, the last line of defense on the kill just keeps getting better and better.  The shot blocking has returned to Rangers hockey.  Now if the Blueshirts can get that “too many men on the ice” thing worked out, we won’t be as reliant on the PK and can enjoy more of that stretch pass offense that is exciting to watch.

Finally, catching up from the past week, congrats to JT Miller for his first two NHL goals, Gabby for 2 Birthday points and Arron Asham for his first goal as a Ranger. That goal earned AA a pretty cool achievement of scoring a goal for every Atlantic Division team in his 14 seasons.  Speaking of Double A, who doesn’t love that Forth Line of Jeff Halpern, Arron Asham and Darroll Powe?  I’m sure someone wiser, with more wit than I, will come up with a cooler name for them, but I offer up: The Journeymen.

Remember: Hockey Day in America, Sunday, February 17th.

Go Rangers!

Game 13; It’s a Valentine’s day hockey at the Garden!

940-rangers-islanders-8col

(Kathy Kmonicek/Associated Press)

New York Islanders (4-7-1) @ New York Rangers (7-5-0)

While many others are looking for their own Valentines today, I doubt that there’s no love between these two when they skate up the ice tonight. No matter what, this rivalry lights up the players and the fans time after time. Tonight’s game will start three game homestand. The Rangers will host the Capitals on Sunday and the Canadiens on Tuesday night. Ladies and gentleman, it’s the good old rivalry night at the Garden!

NYI:

The Islanders are rolling on the downhill. After a good start they’ve been outscored 20-9 in their five-game losing streak. On Monday night the Islanders scored four power play goals but they failed to get any points while falling 6-4 against the Hurricanes at the Nassau Coliseum. Even though the Islanders are desperately trying get back to winning, they haven’t done that lately in the Garden. They’re also 2-4-0 against the Atlantic Division teams this year. Rick DiPietro played against the Canes but expecting to see Evgeni Nabokov in the net against the Rangers.

NYR:

On the contrary to the Islanders, the Rangers are getting better day by day. Despite the fact that the Bruins were able to tie the game up late in the 3rd period, the Rangers stayed calm and got what they deserved – two valuable points in the standings. The brilliant assist by Rick Nash lead to Carl Hagelin’s fourth goal of the season. Anton Stralman’s first goal of the season gave the Rangers 3-0 lead in the third period but as said the Bruins did make a strong comeback. Thanks to shootout goals by Callahan and Nash, the Rangers beat the Bruins for the second time this season.

The Rangers are looking for their fourth win in-a-row and ninth  consecutive win over the Islanders at the Garden. Their penalty kill has been solid and Lundqvist has returned to his own-level. Lately all the Rangers lines have played well which is a key to success in long term.

Key players and stats:

Carl Hagelin has goals in two consecutive games and line containing him, Nash and Stepan has a total of 11 (5+3) points in the last two games. Matt Moulson scored two goals against the Hurricanes and now has 6 goals in the season. This is the second meeting of the season. Next meeting is on Mar. 7 at the Coliseum.

Let’s Go Rangers!

PS. Happy Valentine’s Day for everyone!

PS2. Happy Birthday to our #10! Go Gabby!

Eminger to Whale on Conditioning Stint

The following press release is courtesy of the New York Rangers;

RANGERS ASSIGN DEFENSEMAN STEVE EMINGER

TO CONNECTICUT FOR CONDITIONING

NEW YORK, February 13, 2013 – New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has assigned defenseman Steve Eminger to the Connecticut Whale of the American Hockey League (AHL) for conditioning.

images

Eminger, 29, has skated in four contests this season, having made his season debut on January 23 against Boston. He has not dressed in six of the Rangers last seven games. Eminger is four points shy of 100 career NHL points, having registered 19 goals and 77 assists in 457 career regular season games.

The Woodbridge, Ontario native was acquired by the Rangers from Anaheim in exchange for Aaron Voros and Ryan Hillier on July 9, 2010. He was originally selected by the Washington Capitals as a first round choice, 12th overall, in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.
