Game 2; Biggest game of the season coming up for the Rangers in LA!

New York Rangers @ Los Angeles Kings, Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final

The Rangers are back in the business tonight when they visit the Los Angeles Kings in the Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Finals. The Blueshirts already led the Game 1, 2-0 after the first period but they weren’t able to secure the victory. Drew Doughty tied the game with magnificent goal and Justin Williams scored the game winner after Dan Girardi’s mistake in own zone. While the Rangers maybe played their best hockey of the playoffs in the first period, they were completely dominated by the Kings in the third period. Carl Hagelin was stopped by Jonathan Quick on the breakaway with under minute to go in the regulation time but Kings netminder was able to make a big save. Alain Vigneault told the media after the game that “every single player needs to bring his A game, too many guys brought their B effort”. Wise words by the head coach, tonight the Rangers need big effort from every single player throughout the line-up. Game 3 will be played at Madison Square Garden on Monday night.

LAK:

This Kings team is stacked with offensive power in Marian Gaborik, Anze Kopitar and Jeff Carter but Justin Williams has melted the hearts of the Kings fans with his superb performances in this post season. Williams, who is 7-0 in career Game 7’s, scored the game winner in the Game 1 and he now has 8 goals in the playoffs. The Game 1 was like Kings’ post season in the nutshell. They didn’t start the game well, improved their game as the game went on and when the stakes were high enough – they were able to left the ice as  winners. Darryl Sutter wasn’t pleased with his teams performance and told the media that “we have to be better in every category of the game in the next game”.

NYR:

Carl Hagelin has been one of the best Rangers forwards this spring and he keeps surprising people in every series. In the Game 1 he had a breakaway goal and almost the game winner in the winding seconds of the third period. Hagelin’s and Chris Kreider’s speed is the key for success in this series. The Kings defense is highly skilled but they don’t have the best skaters on their blueline. John Moore is eligible to make his return to the line-up tonight after two game suspension. Moore will take over Raphael Diaz spot in the third defensive pair. Benoit Pouliot and Hagelin scored for the Rangers in the opening game of the series but they will need much more from their star players like Rick Nash and Martin St. Louis. Henrik Lundqvist made some spectular saves along the way but he wasn’t pleased with his performance. The Rangers aren’t facing elimination and this isn’t the Game 7 but you can sense that tonight’s game is a big one. 4 wins out of 5 games against the Kings? Sounds tough enough. Win tonight and head back to NYC with series tied in one.

Game 2; Easter Sunday is a hockey day!

Philadelphia Flyers @ New York Rangers

Game 2; Sunday 20th of April @ Madison Square Garden, New York, NY

The Rangers are back in the business today at noon as they host the Philadelphia Flyers in the Game 2 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals. The Blueshirts rallied to 4-1 victory on Thursday night in Game 1 and they have a chance to travel to Philly with 2-0 lead in the series. The Rangers stayed patient in the Game 1 although the Flyers scored on their first shot. Henrik Lundqvist was a big factor but the Blueshirts power play was a key to success – they scored two power play goals in span of 47 seconds. Steve Mason, who didn’t play in the Game 1 due head injury, is healthy enough to play today and the Flyers need a big effort from him. Thursday’s victory was the Rangers 10th consecutive win against the Flyers on Garden ice. Philly’s last win from the World’s Most Famous Arena is from March of 2011. The first post season meeting between these two has now been opened. If you think this series is going to be short and easy – I suggest you think again. Rangers and Flyers, playoff hockey at the Garden on Easter Sunday – it doesn’t get much better than this.

PHI:

15 shots and 14 minutes of penalty time. That was the fact of the game for the Flyers. Although Andrew McDonald was able to beat Henrik Lundqvist with Philly’s first shot, overall the Flyers created just a few scoring chances. In the third period whole team was credited with just one shot. Other factor was the penalties. Rookie Jason Akeson was called double minor for high sticking and the Rangers made the Flyers and Akeson pay. Flyers D Kimmo Timonen had some troubles throughout the game and Craig Berube preferred McDonald and Coburn on the ice. Ray Emery wasn’t bad at all but if Steve Mason is healthy – he will get a start in the Game 2. Scott Hartnell told the media after the game that “our mindset wasn’t at the right level” and he ensured that “we will have a different mindset into Game 2”.

NYR:

The Rangers fans have waited for Brad Richards to shine and oh boy he did that in the Game 1. Richards gave the Rangers a lead in the third period with his beautiful one-timer on the power play and he got a primary assist on both Derek Stepan’s and Carl Hagelin’s goals. Mats Zuccarello started the scoring for the Rangers as he beat Ray Emery in the 1st period. The Blueshirts used Akeson’s double minor with the best possible way – scored two PP goals and rallied to win in the Game 1. Overall the Rangers played very well, there weren’t many odd man rushes for the Flyers and the Rangers did a good job with the puck in their own zone.

The Rangers need to stay discipline and stay out of the penalty box. The Flyers power play is good enough to turn this series around if they get a chance to do it. Vice versa if the Rangers can continue to score power play goals, the Flyers need to try stay out of the box – which isn’t typical for them. Lundqvist played well and the team can count on him 110%.

Game 45; NYR visit the defending champs Blackhawks, 7 #NYR players in Sochi

The Rangers are back in the action tonight when they visit the defending champions Chicago Blackhawks. 10 players from the Blackhawks and 7 players from the Rangers will play in Sochi for their national teams so tonight’s game is all about the quality. The Rangers fought hard on Monday night and they were able to force the game to the shootout – just to see the Blue Jackets to take the extra point. Rick Nash scored two goals against his former team while Brandon Dubinsky scored one for the Jackets. Henrik Lundqvist was back in the net but couldn’t help the team in the shootout. Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews and Patrick Sharp – just a few names to mention from this Blackhawks team. Dan Girardi and Ryan McDonagh will have a busy night for sure. Following tonight’s game, the Rangers will host the Dallas Stars at Madison Square Garden on Friday night.

CHI:

A year ago Antti Raanta won the Finnish Elite League champion and soon after that he played for the Finnish National Team in the World Championships. Now he’s playing in Chicago and he has been playing well – sounds like a miracle story? The last time the same team won two consecutive Cups was in 1998 when the Detroit Red Wings beat the Washington Capitals in the Finals. Is this Blackhawks good enough to win their 3rd Cup in just 5 years? Well they have a pretty good chance to do it. The team is filled with offensive talent, they have good defense and now they also have a great goaltender. The Hawks will make the playoffs but it’s up to the players how badly they wanna win in the playoffs.

NYR:

Congratulations to Ryan McDonagh, Ryan Callahan, Derek Stepan (USA), Henrik Lundqvist, Carl Hagelin (SWE), Rick Nash (CAN) and Mats Zuccarello (NOR) for being named to their national teams in Sochi. Being able to represent your own country in the Olympics is a huge honour for every athlete! As long as they don’t get hurt in Sochi, everything’s fine. Rick Nash was named to Team Canada and on Monday night he showed why. Nash played probably his best game in long time and scored two goals against his former team. Nash and Zuccarello both failed in the shootout and the Blue Jackets left the Garden with two points.

Tonight the Rangers need a big effort from their top D pair. The Blackhawks offense is so talented that Henrik Lundqvist will have a busy night ahead of him. The Rangers power play has been surprisingly good in the last couple of games and if they can draw a few penalties – they have a good chance to make the Blackhawks pay.

Game 45; Hudson River Rivalry – Round 3 at the Garden!

20130421-130824.jpg

New Jersey Devils (17-17-10) @ New York Rangers (23-17-4)

The Rangers conclude their busy week this afternoon as they host the Devils at the Garden. As the regular season winds down with only 4 games left, this is the first meeting of season between the Rangers and the Devils at the MSG. The Devils won’t make the playoffs this year but they’re ready to spoil the playoff hopes for the Rangers. The Devils beat the Panthers 6-2 yesterday while the Rangers are coming off from great win over the Sabres. Hudson River Rivalry continues!

NJD:

The Devils lost Ilya Kovalchuk and eventually after that they lost 10 games in the row. Last night they got him back and continued winning when they beat the Panthers 6-2. After long playoff run last year, this season has been tough for the Devils. They started the season very well but injuries and offensive struggles made them pay. For example, last week they outshooted the Sens and the Maple Leafs 65 to 24 but lost both games 0-2. Against the Rangers, we can expect almost anything from this team. I wouldn’t be surprised if guys like David Clarkson and Ryan Carter are trying to get something going on with Clowe/Asham.

NYR:

The Rangers have scored 14 goals in the last two games. Yeah, you read it right. Game against the Sabres was pivotal but surely nobody expected this outcome. After 898 games in the league, Brad Richards finally got his 1st NHL hat-trick. In addition, Carl Hagelin, Rick Nash, Anton Stralman, Ryan Clowe and Ryan Callahan scored for the Rangers. The win eliminated the Sabres and the Flyers from the playoffs.

With 4 games left almost anything can still happen. The Rangers are 3 points behind 6th place Islanders and 2 points behind the 7th place Sens. Lundqvist will continue playing and the line-up remains the same. The main goal for the Rangers is get in to the playoffs and after that they can worry about the seeding. They can’t clinch the playoff spot today but if they do win – that’s a huge step towards the playoffs.

Key players and stats:

Good thing for the Rangers is that Brad Richards is getting the points. He has 10 goals in the season with 4 goals in the last two games. Although the Rangers gave up 4 goals against the Sabres, Henrik Lundqvist is playing very well. If he can continue playing like this, the Rangers can beat any team in the league. For the Devils, Martin Brodeur usually plays his best games against the Rangers. Although their overall record is pretty weak, they have guys who can score goals (Belive it or not!) David Clarkson has 14 goals in the season while Patrik Elias has 13. This is the third of four meetings this season. Teams will close-up their regular seasons on April 27th at the Madison Square Garden.

Game 41; The Battle of New York – Part 4, “Must-win for the Rangers?

20130413-145942.jpg

New York Rangers (20-16-4) @ New York Islanders (21-16-4)

The Rangers are back in business tonight when they visit the Islanders on Long Island. With just 7-8 games left in the regular season, the both teams are currently at the playoffs spots. If the both teams make the playoffs, that’s the first time since 2006-2007 season when that happens. You can’t underestimate how big this game is. Teams have met three times this season and the Rangers have won two meetings. The Rangers and the Islanders with the playoff feeling in the air – it doesn’t get much better than this!

NYI:

Josh Bailey scored twice and the Isles beat the Bruins 2-1 on Thursday night in Boston. After being several years in the lower bottom of the conference, this year the Islanders really have a chance to make the playoffs. They have 7 games left in the regular season and four of those games are against the teams which are not currently in the playoff spots. The Islanders have been terrific road team this year but they have had problems winning at home. John Tavares is the leader of this team but he has received a lot of offensive help from guys like Matt Moulson and Brad Boyes. As a little surprise, Evgeni Nabokov has been playing very well and he’s the one reason why they are still fighting for the last playoff spots.

NYR:

It took full 65 minutes of play and three rounds of the shootout but the Rangers left the MSG with two very valuable points with them. Phil Kessel scored twice for the Leafs while Carl Hagelin and Ryan McDonagh scored for the Rangers. Mats Zuccarello was only scorer in the shootout and with saves by Lundqvist, the Rangers beat the Leafs 3-2.

The Rangers enter tonight’s game with 44 points and they are currently at the 8th place in the Eastern Conference. They trail the Senators by four and the Isles by two points. They are tied with the Jets (two games in hand) and 4 points ahead of the Devils in the standings. Good thing for the Rangers is their schedule. Every game will be hard to win but they have more day offs now than in the early parts of the season. Especially this is good thing for Lundqvist!

Key players and stats:

The Rangers wanted the secondary scoring and they got what they wanted. Carl Hagelin scored his first goal in 11 games against the Leafs. They hope that guys like Mats Zuccarello and Derick Brassard can bring more offense to their games. Rick Nash loves to be in the spotlight and tonight he certainly is. For the Isles, they need another strong game from Nabokov. The Islanders are very fast team and they turn the game very quickly. The Rangers need to look out Michael Grabner, who’s always dangerous with his speed. This is the last meeting of the regular season.

Game 16; It’s time for a another playoff rematch!

Richard Wolowicz/Getty Images North America)

Richard Wolowicz/Getty Images North America)

New York Rangers (8-6-1) @ Ottawa Senators (9-6-2)

These teams played 7 tough playoff games last spring against each other including the terrific “Game 7” at the Madison Square Garden. The Rangers advanced to the 2nd round while the Senators booked their vacations after that game. But enought with the past, both teams have some significant injuries to struggle with in tonight’s game. Can the Rangers end the Senators streak and get some valuable points to the standings? The Senators are definitely looking for a revenge – another tought night ahead!

OTT:

After a good start to the season, the Senators have been hit hard. First they lost Jason Spezza (back injury) and most recently they lost Erik Karlsson (achilles). Both players are probably out for a season. After falling 3-0 to Maple Leafs, the Senators are currently on the two game winning streak (NJD, NYI). Coach McLean has a lot of things to solve out after a significant losses. While Craig Anderson has been as good as last year – they desperately need more offense. Young Swedish Jakob Silfverberg and Mika Zibanejad have a great chance to prove what they can do.

NYR:

The Rangers had a big test in the game against Canadiens as they played without Rick Nash who was out with an undisclosed injury. Team announced that Nash won’t make a trip to Ottawa but may join the team in Montreal. Anton Stralman got his first goal of the season but that wasn’t enough. Max Pacioretty’s goal tied the game and Alex Galchenyuk’s was able to get a game winner. The Rangers gambled – but they didn’t get pay off. Raphael Diaz scored the empty-netter and the Canadiens increased their winning streak to five games.

Coach Tortorella admit that the Rangers could’t keep up the pace in the last game. He called it “one of the worst hockey games I’ve been involved in”.

Expecting to see Lundqvist getting the start against the Senators while Biron could get his 3rd start against the Habs. With Powe and Nash out, Kreider and Mashinter will be in the line-up.

Key players and stats:

With Spezza and Karlsson out, the Senators needs offensive help from guys like Daniel Alfredsson and Kyle Turris. They both have 4 goals in the season. Craig Anderson has been terrific in the net for the Senators (SV% .950). Carl Hagelin now has points in five consecutive games (career-high). The Rangers power(less) play is now 6-for-55 (10,6%). This is the first of three meetings this season. The Rangers will host the Senators on Mar. 8 and they’ll back in Ottawa on Mar. 28.

2013 Rangers Season Preview

After a 113 day owner imposed lockout, the New York Rangers are itching to get back on the ice to prove last year’s surprise performance that netted them their first 50 win season and first division title in 18 years was not a fluke.  Analysts predicted the 2011-12 Rangers to finish somewhere between the middle of the pack in the Eastern Conference to outside of the top eight after a disappointing exit out of the 2011 playoffs at the hands of Alex Ovechkin and their hated rivals the Washington Capitals.  But from day one of last season, Coach John Tortorella preached hard work and dedication to his defensive system and the results far exceeded anyone’s expectations.  The Rangers shocked us all by not only winning the Atlantic Division but coming within one point of winning the President’s Trophy. And in the playoffs the club won two playoff rounds in the same postseason for the first time in 15 years.

Simply put, the 2012-13 Rangers will not be able to sneak up on anybody.  They made headlines last April and May by winning two gritty seven game series against the Ottawa Senators and the Washington Capitals before succumbing to their cross river rivals, the New Jersey Devils, in another hard fought six games.  The Rangers seemed to run out of gas by the end of the Devils series but it was not in the Rangers nature to use fatigue as an excuse.  Coach Tortorella refused to believe that the loss to the Devils was due to his players being beaten and sometimes broken over the 20 games that they played in the playoffs.  But it was hard to believe that the Rangers were not affected by the fact that they had gone the max in the first two rounds in two very tough series.  A playoff record of 10-10 left the entire organization wanting for more in 2013.

The Rangers continued to make headlines in the offseason as Henrik Lundqvist won the Vezina Trophy, awarded to the league’s best goaltender.  He was the first Ranger to win the award since John Vanbiesbrouck won it in 1985-86.  Lundqvist’s career best 39 wins were second most in Rangers history to Mike Richter’s 42.  King Henrik was also nominated for the Hart Trophy and the Lester B. Pearson Award, two trophies that honor the league’s Most Valuable Player.  However, to no one’s surprise those trophies went to Evgeny Malkin, who led the Penguins to the playoffs in Sidney Crosby’s absence last season.

In July, the Rangers said goodbye to key role players Ruslan Fedotenko, Brandon Prust and John Mitchell and welcomed Taylor Pyatt, Arron Asham and Jeff Halpern via free agency to New York.  Then on July 24th, the Rangers pulled the trigger on their biggest trade since Glen Sather acquired Jaromir Jagr in February, 2004.  After a six month flirtation with Columbus, the Rangers finally added former 40 goal scorer and All Star Rick Nash to the club in return for homegrown Ranger centers Brandon Dubinsky and Artem Anisimov, top defense prospect Tim Erixon and a first round pick in 2013.  The Rangers also received a conditional third round pick and minor league defenseman Steve Delisle in the deal.

The Rangers feel with the addition of Nash and the full recovery from shoulder labrum surgery by Marion Gaborik they possess two of the top five goal scorers in the league.  There is hope that the goal scoring drought that plagued the Rangers throughout the postseason should now be solved.  There is also hope that Chris Kreider will also contribute greatly to the Rangers offense as he will be with the Rangers in the regular season for the first time.

Coaching – Tortorella returns behind the Rangers bench to start his fourth full season at Madison Square Garden.  He was originally hired to replace Tom Renney in February, 2008 and has won 145 of the 267 games he has coached for the Blueshirts.  Those 145 wins are good for fifth all-time in Rangers history.  Tortorella has won a Stanley Cup with the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2003-04 and has also coached an AHL team, the Rochester Americans, to the Calder Cup back in 1995-96.  The coach is known as an abrasive coach but his style suits the Rangers at this time.  They are a tough, blue collar group that blocks a lot of shots and forechecks opponents relentlessly.  In fact, the forecheck and counterattack were the keys to the Rangers success in 2011-12.  And opponents should expect more of the same from a more talented Rangers squad in 2013.  Tortorella will again be assisted by bench coach Mike Sullivan and goaltending coach Benoit Allaire.

Forwards – The addition of Rick Nash will change the dynamic of the Eastern Conference’s best team for the upcoming season.  Nash should immediately make the Rangers a more dangerous team on the power play as well as at even strength.  Teams will no longer be able to throw a checking line out against a Gaborik line or a Callahan line when the Rangers could roll three lines with three different right wingers capable of scoring 30-plus goals.  Chances are either Gaborik or Nash will move over to the left side but the Rangers now have more scoring depth than they have had in a very long time.  Most seem to think that Nash will immediately be paired with Brad Richards to start the season.  But with Gaborik having fully healed from shoulder surgery the Rangers have options on the wings for the top two lines.  The top six forwards should be Nash, Richards, Gaborik, Kreider, center Derek Stepan and winger Ryan Callahan.  Throw in winger Carl Hagelin and the Rangers have seven forwards capable of playing on the top two lines at any time.  Any combination of those seven will be difficult to defend.

On the checking line, the Rangers hope that Hagelin continues to develop as a defensive forward and penalty killer as well as a scorer.  There is also hope that center Brian Boyle will rediscover the scoring touch that netted him 20 goals in 2010-11.  Last year’s offensive slump did not affect Boyle’s ability to make plays and check opponents’ best lines.  Boyle did a great job all year long as the Rangers primary checking center.  Boyle and Hagelin will most likely be joined by Taylor Pyatt, who arrives from Phoenix with a lot of size and ability.

On primarily what will be a fourth line, the Rangers expect more out of Mike Rupp, who was hampered by a knee injury that lingered throughout the season last year.  They also added Halpern, a well respected faceoff specialist, as well as Asham for grit and toughness.  Asham is the type of player that most fans of opposing teams hate but love when he is a member of their team.  The Rangers are hoping he becomes a fan favorite as quickly as former Ranger Brandon Prust did when he first arrived on the scene.

Providing depth for the forwards are new additions Michael Haley and Brandon Segal, who have seen a lot of ice time down with the AHL’s Connecticut Whale, as well as rookies J.T. Miller, Christian Thomas and Marek Hrivik, who have yet to take the ice at the NHL level.

Defensemen – This unit became one of the NHL’s best in 2011-12 when Ryan McDonagh and All-Star selection Dan Girardi really stepped up to become one of the league’s best pairings.  While former first round pick Marc Staal was recovering from post-concussion syndrome McDonagh and Girardi stepped up their game and became the Rangers their best pairing since Brian Leetch and Jeff Beukeboom patrolled the Garden ice in the mid-1990s.  Staal returned in January to play in last year’s Winter Classic and regained his form within a couple of weeks.  He was joined by Anton Stralman and formed a solid second pairing from early spring through the playoffs.

Another first round pick, Michael Del Zotto, rebounded from an underachieving sophomore season to find a new dimension to his game and really was one of the better players on the Rangers for long stretches of last season.  Del Zotto’s skating and puck moving abilities were key assets for the Rangers as he limited turnovers in the defensive zone.  His game has transitioned from more of an offensive minded defenseman to a very solid two-way blueliner.  Armed with a new two year contract, the hope is that Del Zotto continues to grow both offensively and defensively.

Also returning to the Rangers are free agent defensemen Stu Bickel, Mike Eminger and Matt Gilroy. Both Bickel and Eminger played in over 40 games for the Rangers last year and performed well enough to crack the lineup as sixth defensemen.  However, you have to question how much Coach Tortorella trusts either player as Bickel averaged only 5:10 per game in the postseason and Eminger only 6:49 of ice time.  Gilroy rejoins the Rangers after a 2011-12 season split between Tampa Bay and Ottawa.  He has been playing in Hartford and had six goals and nine assists but was a terrible -16 in 34 games for the Whale since October. The defense seemed to wear down as the playoffs went on because of the large amounts of ice time that the top four were getting each night.  This may be an area that the Rangers want to look at to get better.

Unfortunately it has recently been announced that defenseman Mike Sauer will miss the entire 2012-13 season because he is still suffering from symptoms of post concussion syndrome.  Sauer was injured in December, 2011 and missed the remainder of the 2011-12 season with those same symptoms.  The Rangers will hold out hope that he will make a full recovery and be part of the club for the 2013-14 season.

Providing depth in Hartford are veterans Sean Collins and Mike Vernace as well as rookie defenseman Dylan McIlrath, who was a first round pick in 2010.  A lot of is expected of McIlrath as he enters his first season as a pro.  His presence has been immediately felt on the AHL level and he could join the big club by late April if his defensive game is as sound as the Rangers would like it to be by then.

Goaltenders – You can make the argument that the Rangers have not had a better goaltender tandem than they have now since the stretch of 1994-97 when Mike Richter and Glenn Healy patrolled the crease at MSG for the Rangers.  Henrik Lundqvist was the team Most Valuable Player last season for the sixth consecutive season.  It is the first time in Rangers history that the award, that is voted on by the Professional Hockey Writers Association, has been given to a player for six seasons in a row.  Very few outside of Los Angeles would argue that King Henrik was the best goaltender in the regular season last year.  His numbers were staggering.  39 wins, 8 shutouts, a 1.97 goals against average and a .930 save percentage were all among league leaders in 2011-12.  Only LA’s Jonathan Quick could be talked about in the same breath as Lundqvist in 2011-12.  And Quick was the one holding the Cup at end of the season last year.

Backing Hank up is the very capable Martin Biron, who re-signed with the Rangers in the offseason for two more years.  His 20 wins over the last two years are the most by a Rangers backup since Healy posted 22 in 1995-97.  Biron will again be relied up to play about 20-25% of the games this season to keep Henrik fresh for what the Rangers hope is a very deep run into the playoffs in 2013.

Intangibles – The Rangers special teams were both a help and a hindrance during the 2011-12 season.  The fifth ranked penalty kill was very effective and helped the team rank third overall in goals against during the season.  The strong penalty kill led by Captain Ryan Callahan also had 8 shorthanded goals which ranked sixth in the NHL.  But for as good as the penalty kill was the power play was equally as bad.  This area has been the club’s achillies heel the last few years.  The Rangers have gotten progressively worse dropping from 13th in the league in 2009-10 to 18th in 2010-11  to 23rd last year.    The decline was inexplicable really with the addition of Brad Richards, who has always excelled throughout his career with the man advantage, the finishing abilities of Gaborik and Callahan and the passing abilities of Stepan and Del Zotto.

In 2012-13, the expectation will be that the power play will be much better with the addition of Nash.   Surprisingly, Nash has not been a superstar on the power play but he also has not been playing with the talented group of players that the Rangers have at their disposal.  Nash has only had 10, 6 and 6 goals the last three years on the PP.  The Rangers hope that the power play unit will gel quickly because they will need to score more goals with the man advantage in order to have success in 2013.

The fear in trading away Brandon Dubinsky and Artem Anisimov while allowing Ruslan Fedotenko and Brandon Prust to leave as free agents is that the penalty kill will take a step backwards.  However, with Callahan, Stepan, Boyle, Pyatt and Hagelin to go along with Richards, Nash and Kreider who can all kill penalties, the Rangers should not lose much in the way of defense when they are a man down.

Expectations – It appears that the pieces are in place for the Rangers to make a long run into the playoffs and win their first Stanley Cup in 19 years.  They have added scoring and grit at forward and more playoff experience to the lineup.  They will have Rick Nash and Chris Kreider for the full 48 game schedule learning and playing in Coach Tortorella’s system.  I believe the only question marks for the team will be: Will Nash be as good as advertised? Will Gaborik regain the form he had before shoulder surgery? Will the penalty kill hold up with new personnel?  And can the Rangers stay healthy enough during this short sprint of a season to overcome their quality of depth issues at forward and defense?

The Rangers will have heavy competition for the division and conference titles from Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Boston, and Washington.  I also think Florida, Carolina and Buffalo will be improved as well.  They will be tested by a road leaning schedule in March and April that has them playing 17 of their last 29 games on the road.  On more than one occasion, the schedule has the Rangers travelling to play four games in four different cities in 8 days.  Even though the travel in the East is typically shorter, that is a lot of travel in a short period of time for the hockey club.

I am not one to make predictions for fear of jinxing the team but I do believe this is the best Rangers team in a long while and I do believe they match up well with every team in the East.  However,  I still feel like they may be one defensive forward, one stabilizing defenseman away from making another long run into the playoffs.  Something just feels missing from this set of forwards and defensemen, especially with the subtraction of Dubinsky, Anisimov and Prust.  They also have not really answered the question of who to play with Del Zotto.  If the Rangers can make a couple of additions or a couple of players emerge to fill those roles and the team feels comfortable rolling at least three, if not, all four lines and all six defensemen consistently, the sky is the limit for this hockey club in 2013.
