Game 4: The biggest game of the season at the Garden – tonight!

Pittsburgh Penguins @ New York Rangers, Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals

The Rangers are back in the business tonight when they host the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semifinals. The Blueshirts won the Game 1 in the overtime but since that they haven’t been able to score and they have lost both games after that. On Monday night, the Rangers got chances but they weren’t able to beat Marc-Andre Fleury who got his second shutout of the series. Alain Vigneault made some line-up changes to the Game 3 as Raphael Diaz made his post season debut with the Rangers with Jesper Fast’s and JT Miller’s return to the line-up. Dan Carcillo has been a big part of the Rangers success this post season and he deserves a chance to play tonight – in the biggest game of the season. Sidney Crosby scored his first post season goal in 14 games as he beat Henrik Lundqvist on the breakway in the Game 3. After tonight’s game,  teams will head back to Pittsburgh for Game 5 on Friday night.

PITTSBURGH:

As Pierre McGuire said in the broadcast, you knew it was coming. Sidney Crosby finally scored a goal in the playoffs and he was one of the best skaters on the ice in the Game 3. The Penguins scored both of their goals in the breakaways as Jussi Jokinen also beat Lundqvist late in the 2nd period. The Pens have done exactly what they have wanted to do – wore down the Rangers speed. With six games in just nine days, the Penguins realized that the Blueshirts are vulnerable for breakways and long passes. Pittsburgh have sticked to their game plan and for now it’s paying off a big time. Marc-Andre Fleury has stopped 81 out of 84 shots in this series and to be honest, he has been one of the best players throughout the whole series.

NEW YORK:

The Rangers are 0 for 13 on the power play against the Penguins in this series. You keep reading the texts about the Bruins and their terrible power play during their Cup run in 2011 but you realize the fact that if our power play doesn’t get fixed – we’re in the big trouble. Coming in to tonight’s Game 4, the Blueshirts haven’t scored on their last 57 shots. To put it shortly, they have scored from only 4 % of their shots in this series and that’s something that has to change fast. New York’s top line of Derek Stepan, Rick Nash and Martin St. Louis isn’t even close to what they should look like out on the ice. They are not generating enough scoring chances and when they do get one – they usually shoot wide. Rick Nash has been one of the biggest stor ylines of the Rangers post season and you keep wondering, how long it will take Nash to score a goal? He is now scored two (2) goals in his 26 career playoff games and he hasn’t score a PP goal in 40 games. Two goals including the game winner tonight would pretty much erase those stats from your memories for a while.

Is Chris Kreider healthy enough to go tonight? That’s the big question of the day. Kreider, who has missed the last 18 games, skated with the team on Tuesday and is set to meet with the team doctor today before the game. If #20 is ready to go, he would bring much needed spark and fresh legs to the Rangers line-up.

The Rangers did look tired in the Game 3 and head coach Alain Vigneault mentioned in the post game coverage that Rangers “schedule has been stupid”. We can all agree to that one but you can’t admit that your team is tired during the playoffs. When you admit that – you’re about to give up. Tonight’s game is by far the biggest game of the season for the Rangers and it’s pretty much “win or go home” set up. If we win tonight the series is wide open going back to Steel City in 2-2 but if we won’t – that 3-1 mountain could be too high to climb on. We are not done yet.

Game 45; NYR visit the defending champs Blackhawks, 7 #NYR players in Sochi

The Rangers are back in the action tonight when they visit the defending champions Chicago Blackhawks. 10 players from the Blackhawks and 7 players from the Rangers will play in Sochi for their national teams so tonight’s game is all about the quality. The Rangers fought hard on Monday night and they were able to force the game to the shootout – just to see the Blue Jackets to take the extra point. Rick Nash scored two goals against his former team while Brandon Dubinsky scored one for the Jackets. Henrik Lundqvist was back in the net but couldn’t help the team in the shootout. Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews and Patrick Sharp – just a few names to mention from this Blackhawks team. Dan Girardi and Ryan McDonagh will have a busy night for sure. Following tonight’s game, the Rangers will host the Dallas Stars at Madison Square Garden on Friday night.

CHI:

A year ago Antti Raanta won the Finnish Elite League champion and soon after that he played for the Finnish National Team in the World Championships. Now he’s playing in Chicago and he has been playing well – sounds like a miracle story? The last time the same team won two consecutive Cups was in 1998 when the Detroit Red Wings beat the Washington Capitals in the Finals. Is this Blackhawks good enough to win their 3rd Cup in just 5 years? Well they have a pretty good chance to do it. The team is filled with offensive talent, they have good defense and now they also have a great goaltender. The Hawks will make the playoffs but it’s up to the players how badly they wanna win in the playoffs.

NYR:

Congratulations to Ryan McDonagh, Ryan Callahan, Derek Stepan (USA), Henrik Lundqvist, Carl Hagelin (SWE), Rick Nash (CAN) and Mats Zuccarello (NOR) for being named to their national teams in Sochi. Being able to represent your own country in the Olympics is a huge honour for every athlete! As long as they don’t get hurt in Sochi, everything’s fine. Rick Nash was named to Team Canada and on Monday night he showed why. Nash played probably his best game in long time and scored two goals against his former team. Nash and Zuccarello both failed in the shootout and the Blue Jackets left the Garden with two points.

Tonight the Rangers need a big effort from their top D pair. The Blackhawks offense is so talented that Henrik Lundqvist will have a busy night ahead of him. The Rangers power play has been surprisingly good in the last couple of games and if they can draw a few penalties – they have a good chance to make the Blackhawks pay.

Rangers Final Report Card

Another Rangers season came to an end on Saturday night and the disappointment level has reached an all-time high for some of the players. Players like Henrik Lundqvist and Ryan Callahan could barely speak to the media after the game. The team wasted another valiant effort from Lundqvist by not being able to sustain a pressuring forecheck and allowed the Boston Bruins easy access into their defensive zone throughout the series. The Bruins ended up being everything the Rangers were not. They were tough to play against, they used their speed and smart hockey sense to break out of their own zone time and time again and they used their size to beat up the Rangers physically throughout the five games. They leaned on their depth (fourth line) and their youth (Torey Krug) to fill in the gaps in the roster because of injuries and ineffectiveness and in the end they beat the Rangers in every aspect you can beat an opponent.

But with that said the Rangers won another playoff series this year and the season was not a total failure. As Coach Tortorella reminded the media last night, this club has played 32 playoff games in the last two years and something can be learned from those experiences.  The Rangers traded the often ineffective Marion Gaborik for three huge pieces of their future. They acquired their current and future second line center in Derick Brassard, some grit in Derek Dorsett and a smooth skating, puck moving defenseman in John Moore. Three big pieces for a player that was often in Coach John Tortorella’s dog house. The Rangers witnessed the continued growth of players such as Derek Stepan, who led the team in scoring in the regular season, Ryan McDonagh, Anton Stralman and Carl Hagelin, who regularly took a shift on one of the top two lines as a second year player.

Coach Tortorella often said in post-game press conferences that the team was unable to find its identity. But whose fault is that? Is it the players trying to play in a system that allows for very little creativity or is it the coach trying to squeeze a square peg into a round hole? The lack of any originality on the power play caused the Rangers to reach out to Mats Zuccarello who was playing in the KHL in March. His addition to the lineup added a spark but the team still struggled mightily on the power play and at even strength to score goals. There is no question that Tortorella’s teams know how to be defensively responsible but at what cost? The Rangers do not have a Martin St. Louis or Vinny Lecavalier like Tortorella had in 2004 to lean on to score at will. The Rangers will have to decide on whether they can win with this coach with a candidate such as Lindy Ruff waiting in the wings. Grade: C-

Without a doubt the MVP of the Rangers during 2013 was Henrik Lundqvist. He time and time again kept the team in games and often stood on his head when the Rangers were lax in their defensive zone coverage. The King was at the top of his game for a good deal of the playoffs even after he strained a shoulder muscle in Game 3 vs. the Bruins. Entering the final year of his contract, Hank will be asked to carry the load again for a full season, one the Rangers hope will be a championship one in 2013-14. Grade: A

Martin Biron was inactive for the Rangers after March 30th but provides a decent backup for the Rangers that can win his share of games. In an 82 game season next year, he can expect to play in at least 20 and the Rangers hope he can continue to play at a high level for them and steal a few games in the second night of back to backs or third game in four nights. Biron is trusted within the organization and is a good, if not great, locker room guy. Grade: B-

Defenseman Ryan McDonagh could easily be named the team’s co-MVP. Throughout the regular season and into the playoffs McDonagh was the shutdown #1 defenseman that the Rangers needed especially in the absence of Marc Staal much of the last two seasons. McDonagh excelled in all areas and will expect to be paid handsomely as he is a restricted free agent this offseason. Grade: A

Dan Girardi had another great year as the second half of the Rangers top defensive pairing. His toughness and physical play was contagious and he helped bring out some of the best in his teammates. We saw softer players Michael Del Zotto and Anton Stralman step up their game after being pushed by Coach Tortorella and Assistant Coach Mike Sullivan to play more like Girardi. Armed with a new contract the Rangers can expect more of the same from Girardi for years to come. The only complaint, if any, is that Girardi is often too timid on the power play. He should use that howitzer of a shot a little more often from the point instead of trying to be too fancy taking wrist shots. Grade: A-

For a good portion of the season the Rangers were able to dress a second pairing of Marc Staal and Anton Stralman that was almost as good as their first. We started to see signs that Staal was becoming the #1 defenseman that he once was before he was hit in the face with a puck on March 5th vs. Philadelphia. Staal was skating, moving the puck and using his 6’4” frame to be a force on the blueline until the injury occurred. The Rangers will again take it slow with Staal as they hope the blurred vision that he has will disappear over time. Stralman has really blossomed in Tortorella’s system. He was smarter with the puck, took the body and often was in the right position in the defensive zone. The Rangers are encouraged to know that they have four defensemen in their lineup that can play big minutes every night . Grade(s): B+

While the coach seems to trust Michael Del Zotto enough to play him big minutes, critics and fans alike seem to think that Del Zotto makes too many mistakes for a fourth year pro. For a draft pick tabbed as a future power play point man and #1 defenseman, Del Zotto has not developed into either. Zero power play goals and only 8 assists in 46 games in the regular season and 12 more in the playoffs was very disappointing. The Rangers will question if they can continue to live with the growing pains or move Del Zotto for a player that better fits the system of the coach. With the current coach in his corner it seems to me that Del Zotto will be given another chance to develop his overall game in 2013-14. Grade: C

The addition of John Moore to the blueline gave the Rangers something that they had not had in a long time, a third pairing defensemen that completed the unit. Of course with the luck the Rangers have, Marc Staal was injured soon after Moore joined the club, forcing Moore to play more meaningful minutes and he excelled in all areas playing with a number of different partners. Some called Moore’s smooth skating, puck moving style as McDonagh-lite. If Moore can continue to develop, the Rangers will have gotten a steal from Columbus. Grade: B

Down the stretch, after Staal’s injury the Rangers had to play Steve Eminger, Matt Gilroy, Stu Bickel and Roman Hamrlik a bit more than they would have liked. Eminger (Grade: C+) was the best of the four playing meaningful minutes and playing well in a pairing with John Moore. Eminger was actually a + 1 in the playoffs playing 12:45 a night. Tortorella trusted him a lot more this year than in last year’s playoffs. Gilroy and Bickel did not get into a postseason game and did not do much in the regular season either combining for a -5 in 31 games during the shortened regular season. Lastly, Hamrlik showed why he was cut by Washington in his few games that he played in the playoffs. After an injury kept Stralman out of the lineup, Hamrlik was awful in Game 5 vs. the Bruins turning the puck over on consecutive touches in the neutral zone that led to the game winning goal. He will not return. Grade: D

For all the hype that the acquisition of Rick Nash brought to New York, Nash was not the same player when the playoffs began. He was well below par vs. a Washington team that did not have a shutdown defensive pairing that should be feared. Some have speculated that Nash was injured in the series and I have little explanation as to why Nash seems to have lost his acceleration, creativity and goal scoring touch all at once. He was the team’s leading goal scorer with 21 during the regular season but one goal in 12 games in the playoffs is something that really left the fan base with a bad taste in their mouth. Grade: C+

Captain Ryan Callahan continued to give his all throughout the playoffs and is an inspiration for the club. He works as hard as anyone in the NHL and the results are coming along. Not the most talented player or the biggest in stature, Callahan throws himself into the game each and every night that he is on the ice. There were times that Callahan’s ill-advised penalties or bad giveaways led to opposition goals and Ryan must work to correct those errors. Grade: B

Derek Stepan was the team’s leading scorer during the regular season and the team’s leading goal scorer in the playoffs. Stepan is developing into the top six forward that the Rangers envisioned when they drafted him 51st overall out of the University of Wisconsin in 2008. As a restricted free agent, Stepan will be looking to cash in on a very big breakout season. Grade: A-

Carl Hagelin continued his ascent into the top six forwards in 2013. His speed was a huge factor on the forecheck and he often found himself playing on the top line with Rick Nash on many nights. The Rangers hope that he will continue to find the net a bit more and continue to develop as an excellent two way forward, being as strong on the backcheck as he has been on the forecheck. Grade: B+

When Derick Brassard came over from Columbus in the trade for Marion Gaborik the Ranger fans did not know what to expect. We had heard from Columbus fans and fans of teams in the Western Conference that Brassard was soft, he was a bust, he would never be the top line center that he was targeted to be when he was drafted 6th overall in 2006 by the Blue Jackets. But Brassard was a lot more than the Rangers expected as he stepped up his game down the stretch and led the team in scoring in the playoffs. Brassard’s development allowed the Rangers to slide down their disappointing #1 centerman to the fourth line and eventually to the press box. The Rangers hope that Brassard will continue to make strides forward next year as one of the top two pivots in the system. Grade: B+

When Ryane Clowe was added to a team struggling in scoring some people laughed that the club was adding another player who was no better than a third liner expecting him to be a top line guy. The jury is still out on that but you have to feel like the Rangers gave up way too much (2nd and 3rd round pick in 2013 draft) for a player who seems to be on the down side of 30 and is way too injury prone. As an unrestricted free agent, with a reported asking price of $4.5m per season, I feel the Rangers would be crazy to bring him back and expect him to be a top six forward. They would be better off allowing some of their young stars (Chris Kreider, JT Miller) a chance to play 15-20 minutes a night on the wing. Grade: C

The most disappointing player on the roster was alternate captain Brad Richards. Coming off a season of promise, Richards demise was difficult to watch at times. Once a great power play player, Richards made horrible decisions with the man advantage and was a turnover machine. Questions will be out there whether or not Richards deserves to be on this roster for 2013-14. Do the Rangers give the former Conn Smythe trophy winner another chance to be a top six forward for this team? I’m not so sure. A buyout could be in his future within the next couple of weeks.  Grade: D

The Rangers addition of Taylor Pyatt was to replace the likes of Ruslan Fedotenko. Pyatt was good along the boards and did some good things on the ice, but he brought very little scoring or offensive creativity to the ice. For him to make the club next year I think he needs to step up his game a bit because there are a lot of younger players with more speed (Oscar Lindberg, Jesper Fasth) waiting in the wings for a chance. Grade: C-

Brian Boyle again found himself in Coach Tortorella’s dog house in 2013 for playing too soft. Boyle who stands at 6’7” and who can skate well should find himself being feared by opponents but very often he plays too soft which drives his coaches and fans crazy. A player of that size and ability should be mashing opponents along the wall whether he plays wing or center. I still feel there is a place on this team for one of the team’s best penalty killers. Boyle just needs to step up his nastiness. Grade: C

The book on Derek Dorsett when he arrived from Columbus was that he was abrasive to play against and a guy who goes all out on every shift. The down side was that he takes bad penalties. And as expected he was a little of both. The Rangers need to be more difficult to play against and Dorsett will be a big part of that in 2013-14. For this season, his postseason play left something to be desired after he returned from a broken clavicle injury. Grade: C-

When Mats Zuccarello joined the team in March after a full season in the KHL the Rangers were hoping he would provide a spark to the power play. He did for a short while but his lack of size seems to be a problem when he plays along the wall at even strength and with the man advantage. The Rangers like his ability to make plays but he lacks the ability to be strong on the puck which could stop the team from re-signing him again. Grade: C+

When the Rangers signed Arron Asham in the offseason it was to replace the toughness that left when Brandon Prust left as a free agent. Asham did add some toughness to the lineup but fell out of favor in the postseason when his lack of hustle and speed seemed to hurt the club. There are a few players on the bubble for next season (Pyatt, Zuccarello, Powe) and Asham is one of them. Grade: D+

When Darroll Powe was added at midseason the Rangers were looking for a defensive forward who could win faceoffs and kill penalties. They got exactly that out of Powe but little else. For what he was brought in to do, Powe did a nice job. But the club could not rely on him to provide ANY offense at all and his one dimensional play did not help a club struggling to score goals. Grade: C-

Chris Kreider and JT Miller are the organization’s future. Both showed ability to play amongst the team’s top six forwards and should be in the mix for next year’s club. Their size, speed and skill set is encouraging and the club hopes for more production as they grow up in the system. Kreider appeared to gain confidence in the postseason and the Rangers will hope that he will build on that and make the club coming out of camp in September.  Grade: B-

Micheal Haley and Kris Newbury are fourth line players who are tough and difficult to play against. They are in the organization for that reason. They do not provide much offense but they do provide grit, something that the Rangers lacked through much of the season. Grade: C

There will be some interesting decisions to be made in the Rangers organization this offseason. The club cannot expect to play seven game series in each playoff round and be able to win a Stanley Cup. The team matches up well with almost everyone in the East but they must get more offense out of their top nine forwards. If that means changes need to be made again then so be it.  The team must add more quality depth and must improve their team speed.

Currently the Rangers have nine free agents on their roster. Four UFAs (Clowe, Hamrlik, Eminger, & Gilroy) and five RFAs (Stepan, Hagelin, Zuccarello, McDonagh and Michael Sauer). Some will want the Rangers to bring back Clowe but I am not so sure. With players like Kreider and Miller in the system I would rather see their speed and size on the LW than watching Clowe labor up the ice. Teams that are successful in this league have size and speed and the Rangers need to implement more of both into this lineup.

There will be questions as to whether to bring back Coach Tortorella or not but I think you have to. The Rangers simply were not talented enough this year to match up against a team like the Bruins that could roll four lines or the Penguins that were averaging over four goals a game in the playoffs. The Rangers must get better and stay healthy and I believe with a full training camp and some new players will be poised to make another run at a Cup in 2014.

Game 1; We’re shipping up to Boston! 2nd round opens in Boston!

STEPAN

New York Rangers @ Boston Bruins, Game 1 of the EC Semifinals

After a tremendous 5-0 win in the Game 7 against the Washington Capitals, the Rangers are back in business tonight when they open up their 2nd round series against the Boston Bruins at TD Garden. This is the first time since 1973 when the Rangers and the Bruins meet in the post-season. After couple of days off, the both teams are ready to start the series. Lundqvist vs. Rask, Nash and Callahan vs. Seguin and Marchand, you name it. This series will feature hard hitting, excellent goaltending and probably a low scoring games. Are you ready New York?

BOS:

The Bruins were 0:50 seconds away from loss in the Game 7 against the Maple Leafs on Monday night. They didn’t lost that game. Patrice Bergeron tied the game and eventually got the game winning goal in the overtime. The Bruins are a tough team. The guys like Brad Marchand and Milan Lucic will drive you crazy – if you let them. Zdeno Chara is backbone of their defence but they’re battling with some serious injuries in the defence. Andrew Ference is out with Dennis Seidenberg. Douggie Hamilton and Matt Bartkowski are young defence mans and now they will have a chance to show what they can do in the playoffs.

NYR:

Henrik Lundqvist got back to back shutouts in the Game 6 and the 7 against the Caps. If you need to describe his performance in this series; Incredible! And like in the last minute, the Rangers found their offense and they got it from every line. Especially in the Game 7, the line-up looked very balanced and solid. Derick Brassard got 9 points in the 7 games against the Caps and he leads the Rangers in the points. As weird as it sounds, Arron Asham scored more goals than Brad Richards and Rick Nash combined in the series. But as long as your teams scorers – it doesn’t matter who scores!

Checking-line; Pyatt-Boyle-Dorsett is working very well and even the 4th line with Kreider-Richards-Asham is creating scoring chances (and is scoring goals!). The Rangers need to stay patient, play discipline and use their scoring chances well.

Key players and stats:

Henrik Lundqvist is 21-7-2 with 1.67 GAA and .943 save% in his career against the Bruins. Truth is that the Rangers need to get Nash, Callahan and Richards going in this series. They have received a huge offensive boost from Derick Brassard and Mats Zuccarello but they need strong effort from everybody else. Taylor Pyatt and Arron Asham really made a difference in the series against the Caps and if they can continue doing that, the Rangers will be fine. For the Bruins, you always wanna talk about Zdeno Chara. Slovakian giant played over 29 minutes in the Game 7 against the Maple Leafs and with injuries to Dennis Seidenberg and Andrew Ference, he needs to do that every night. Milan Lucic and Brad Marchand will do the dirty work but they’re also scoring goals. Tuukka Rask is very good young Finnish goaltender and he will give the Bruins a chance to win every game.

Let’s GO RANGERS!

Game 48; The last stop before the playoffs!

DEVSNYR
New Jersey Devils (19-18-10) @ New York Rangers (25-18-4)
The Rangers will conclude their 2013 regular season this afternoon against their division rival New Jersey Devils at the MSG. Despite the score of tonight’s game, the Rangers will head to the playoffs while the Devils season will end and they’re ready to start up the summer. A win would put up the Rangers to 6th spot but the Senators still have a game in hand. Hudson River Rivalry on the last day of the regular season with clinched playoff berth – sounds good to me!
NJD:
Too many injuries and offensive struggles made the Devils pay. After a terrific last season with appereance in the Stanley Cup Finals, this year was different. Although the Devils missed the playoffs, they have been playing well lately. They have won 4 out of their last 5 games with only loss coming against the Rangers. For them, this game is not meaningless. They want to beat the Rangers one more time this season. Johan Hedberg will get a start in the season final and he will presumably go against Lundqvist. Remains to be seen how many Devils player will head to the World Championships in Sweden/Finland.
NYR:
The Rangers stayed patient and got some lucky bounces on Thursday night in Raleigh. They started the game very well and Derick Brassard made it 2-0 already in the 1st period. The Canes made a comeback and scored three unanswered goals. Late in the 3rd period, Brad Richards shot from the point found it’s way in and the Rangers tied the game. When the times are tough, who can you trust on – to your captain! Ryan Callahan scored the GWG in the overtime and clinched the Rangers playoff spot.
With the shortened season, things will get tricky. A lot of injuries, tough schedules and players will come and go. After the team went through all those thing, the Rangers did what was needed – they made the playoffs. Sure it wasn’t an easy ride but yes they made it. And now it’s a whole new ballgame. Wheter it’s the Capitals or the Bruins, this team will fight and work in every shift in every game. Cause that’s just how they play and that makes them very tough team to beat – especially in the playoffs.
Key players and stats:
The Rangers need strong efforts from guys like Brad Richards and Ryan Callahan if they wanna have a long run in the playoffs. Good thing is that they are already playing very well. Richards is putting up points and Callahan has showed why he’s the captain in the recent games. Another player who has been playing very well is Mats Zuccarello. He’s confident with the puck, he’s getting points and most of all he makes his linemates better. For the Devils, David Clarkson is their leading scorer with 15 goals. For Ilya Kovalchuk, this shortened season was a big disappointment. He has only 11 goals in 36 games. Surely, this is the last meeting of the season. And this time it ends with Henrik – not Henrique!

New York Rangers (24-18-4) @ Carolina Hurricanes (19-24-3)

One more road game ahead for the Rangers tonight when they visit the Carolina Hurricanes at RBC Center. The Rangers couldn’t clinch the playoff spot against the Panthers but they a have another chance tonight. Two points will secure their spot in the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Hurricanes are coming off from the shootout win over the Islanders. After tonight contest, the Rangers will close up their regular season against the Devils at the Garden while the Hurricanes will end their season in Pittsburgh. The Rangers and the Canes, Enjoy!

CAR:

Even without Marc Staal, there will be three Staals on the ice tonight. 22-year-old Jared Staal will make his NHL debut tonight against the Rangers. The Canes have won just 3 out of their last 13 games but at the moment they are in the two game winning streak. This season has been tough for them. After good start to the season they lost a few key players for a long time. Tuomo Ruutu has played in only 15 games this season. Even bigger disappointment was Cam Ward’s knee injury. Dan Ellis and Justin Peters haven’t been able to carry the team. The Canes have beaten the Lightning and the Isles, they’re ready to end their season with pride.

NYR:

After winning three games in-the-row, the Rangers couldn’t find a way to beat the Panthers on their home-ice. They outshooted the Panthers 38-to-16 but the home team used their chances well. The first period was scoreless but early in the second period, Filip Kuba gave the Panthers 1-0 lead. The Rangers tied the game early in the 3rd period with the goal by Taylor Pyatt. Brad Richards was called for tripping at 6:43 in the 3rd – and the Panthers cashed in. After a beautiful set-up, Marcel Goc scored his 8th of the season and gave the Panthers 2-1 lead. The Rangers pulled out Lundqvist and tried to tie the game with 6 attackers just to see Drew Shore getting empty-netter. In the last minute, Derick Brassard made it 3-2.

Despite the loss against the Panthers, the Rangers still controls their own destiny. The Winnipeg Jets will play their final game of the season tonight against the Canadiens. If they can’t get any points – the Rangers will clinch the playoff spot.

Key players and stats:

After going 24 games without the points, Taylor Pyatt now has points in four consecutive games (2+2). John Moore has 1 goal and 4 assists in the 11 games with the Rangers. He had one assist in the 17 games with the Blue Jackets. Henrik Lundqvist is now ranked 4th in the league on SV% with .926. For the Hurricanes, you need to look out for Eric Staal and Jiri Tlusty. They have scored total of 39 goals this season. Expecting to see goaltender match-up, Dan Ellis vs. Henrik Lundqvist. This is the last meeting of the season. The Rangers have won both previous meetings (2-1 SO and 4-1)

Game 46; Last trip to Sunshine State!

20130423-124439.jpg

New York Rangers (24-17-4) @ Florida Panthers (13-26-6)

The Rangers open the last week of regular season tonight when they visit the Florida Panthers. This is the lonely visit to the Sunshine State this season and the Rangers are trying to extend their winning streak to four. After terrible road trip (0-4-0), the Panthers are trying to get back to winning their home ice. With the win tonight and the Jets loss against the Caps, the Rangers will secure their place in the playoffs. 18 goals scored by the Rangers in the last three games – can they keep it up? It’s the New York Rangers Gameday!

FLA:

The Panthers were outscored 21-to-5 in their four game road trip over the last week. They were beaten by the Isles, the Rangers, the Devils and the Bruins. This season was a disaster for the Panthers but their future is looking bright. Guys like Jonathan Huberdeau and Nick Bjugstad will be a big part of teams future. 13 players have made their NHL debuts this season with the Panthers. One thing the Panthers need to figure out is their goaltending situation. Can Jakob Markström or Scott Clemmensen lead the to the playoffs next year?

NYR:

The Rangers extended their winning streak to three on Sunday afternoon when they beat the Devils 4-1. This win also eliminated the Devils from the playoffs so the Rangers got some revenge from last years disappointment. Captain Callahan opened the scoring just 34 seconds into the 1st period and Derek Stepan made it 2-0 after a great play by Ryan McDonagh. Taylor Pyatt extended lead to 3-0 in the 2nd and Callahan got his 14th of the season in the 3rd period. Andrei Loktionov scored the lonely goal for the Devils.

Henrik Lundqvist will get another start tonight and the line-up remains the same. The Rangers have found their scoring and with the way the team is playing at the moment, nobody wants to face them in the 1st round of the playoffs. With the Lundqvist effort alone, the Rangers have a chance to win the series.

Key players and stats:

The Rangers have scored 42 goals in the April (Most in the whole league) and suddenly they are ranked 16th in the goals. Brad Richards was awarded with 2nd star of the week by the NHL and he has 7 points in the last three games including his 1st NHL hat-trick. Derek Stepan now has 40 points in the 45 games this season. Derick Brassard has 9 points in the last 10 games after joining the team. Jonathan Huberdeau scored a highlight reel goal in the teams last meeting and he’s the Panthers most dangerous offensive player. As said, this is the last meeting in the regular season. Both teams have won one contest.

Game 45; Hudson River Rivalry – Round 3 at the Garden!

New Jersey Devils (17-17-10) @ New York Rangers (23-17-4)

The Rangers conclude their busy week this afternoon as they host the Devils at the Garden. As the regular season winds down with only 4 games left, this is the first meeting of season between the Rangers and the Devils at the MSG. The Devils won’t make the playoffs this year but they’re ready to spoil the playoff hopes for the Rangers. The Devils beat the Panthers 6-2 yesterday while the Rangers are coming off from great win over the Sabres. Hudson River Rivalry continues!

NJD:

The Devils lost Ilya Kovalchuk and eventually after that they lost 10 games in the row. Last night they got him back and continued winning when they beat the Panthers 6-2. After long playoff run last year, this season has been tough for the Devils. They started the season very well but injuries and offensive struggles made them pay. For example, last week they outshooted the Sens and the Maple Leafs 65 to 24 but lost both games 0-2. Against the Rangers, we can expect almost anything from this team. I wouldn’t be surprised if guys like David Clarkson and Ryan Carter are trying to get something going on with Clowe/Asham.

NYR:

The Rangers have scored 14 goals in the last two games. Yeah, you read it right. Game against the Sabres was pivotal but surely nobody expected this outcome. After 898 games in the league, Brad Richards finally got his 1st NHL hat-trick. In addition, Carl Hagelin, Rick Nash, Anton Stralman, Ryan Clowe and Ryan Callahan scored for the Rangers. The win eliminated the Sabres and the Flyers from the playoffs.

With 4 games left almost anything can still happen. The Rangers are 3 points behind 6th place Islanders and 2 points behind the 7th place Sens. Lundqvist will continue playing and the line-up remains the same. The main goal for the Rangers is get in to the playoffs and after that they can worry about the seeding. They can’t clinch the playoff spot today but if they do win – that’s a huge step towards the playoffs.

Key players and stats:

Good thing for the Rangers is that Brad Richards is getting the points. He has 10 goals in the season with 4 goals in the last two games. Although the Rangers gave up 4 goals against the Sabres, Henrik Lundqvist is playing very well. If he can continue playing like this, the Rangers can beat any team in the league. For the Devils, Martin Brodeur usually plays his best games against the Rangers. Although their overall record is pretty weak, they have guys who can score goals (Belive it or not!) David Clarkson has 14 goals in the season while Patrik Elias has 13. This is the third of four meetings this season. Teams will close-up their regular seasons on April 27th at the Madison Square Garden.

Game 44; The Rangers meet the Sabres in the pivotal match-up!

New York Rangers (22-17-4) @ Buffalo Sabres (19-19-6)

The Rangers are right back at the action tonight when they visit their state rival Buffalo Sabres. Both teams are coming off from wins and they both desperately need two points tonight. The Sabres still have a chance to make the playoffs. This game is a must win for them. For the Rangers, they are tied with Jets with 46 points with one game in hand. Very important game for both teams – you don’t wanna miss this one!

BUF:

The Sabres season has been a rollercoaster ride. They fired their headcoach Lindy Ruff earlier this season then they hired Ron Rolston as a headcoach. Most recently they lost Tyler Myers for the season. And still, after a tough season they’re trying to make the last push to the playoffs. The Sabres are 4 points behind the Jets and the Rangers but they only have 4 games left in the regular season. At the trade deadline, the Sabres traded their captain Jason Pominville to the Wild. After that they have been playing well and they are 6-3-1 in their last 10 games. Ryan Miller has been a key to their success lately.

NYR:

You don’t have to be big to score some goals in the NHL. Small guys like Mats Zuccarello and Derick Brassard both scored two goals against the Panthers and the Rangers eventually beat them 6-1. Richards and Nash also scored for the Rangers. Jonathan Huberdeau had the Panthers lonely goal. The game wasn’t that easy and time to time the Panthers had long shifts in the Rangers end. In the end, the Rangers got what they wanted – two valuable points.

After tonight’s game, the Rangers only have 4 games left in the regular season with two of them against the Devils at the Garden. They need to get every point they can. So it seems that Lundqvist will play all the games. According to the Sport Club Stats, the Rangers now have 83,5% chance to make the playoffs. You really can’t underestimate the value of tonight’s game.

Key players and stats:

Norwegian hobbit, Mats Zuccarello has scored 3 goals in the last two games. Rick Nash scored his 18th goal of the season against the Panthers. John Moore played very good game last night, he had scoring chances, he made good defensive plays and got his 1st regular season fight. Henrik Lundqvist was solid as usual and he was awarded with the 1st star of the game. For the Sabres, you need to look out Tomas Vanek. Austrian sniper has 16 goals and 18 assists in the season. If the goaltending match-up is Lundqvist vs. Miller, the game is going to be low scoring. This is the last meeting in the regular season. The both teams have won one meeting.

Game 43; Crucial points up for the grab as the Panthers visit the MSG.

20130418-170503.jpg

Florida Panthers (13-23-6) @ New York Rangers (21-17-4)

The Rangers are back at the MSG tonight when they host the Florida Panthers. Both teams are coming off from losses on Tuesday night. The Flyers beat the Rangers 3-2 while the Panthers were beaten by the Islanders 5-2. Florida won the teams only meeting this season 3-1 at the Garden on Mar. 21. Other team is playing for the pride and the other is desperately trying to get some points. After tonight’s game, the Rangers will travel to Buffalo to meet the Sabres on Friday night.

FLA:

This season has been “normal” for the Panthers. Last year they surprised everybody and almost made their way to the Eastern Conference semifinals. The Panthers have won only 13 games this season and their goal difference is -46. They really have missed one of their veteran player, Ed Jovanovski, who has played in only 6 games this season. On the bright side, Jonathan Huberdeau will be a big name for this team. 19-year-old rookie has 13 goals and 14 assists in the season. Last time these teams met, Jacob Markström played very well in the Panthers net. Expecting to see him again in the net.

NYR:

At this time in the regular season you hope that your special teams will get the job done. Unfortunately for the Rangers, they couldn’t get the job done against the Flyers. They were 0-for-5 on the power play and they gave up a PP goal to the Flyers. Mats Zuccarello and Derek Stepan scored for the Rangers but they were beaten 3-2. For Zuccarello, the goal was first since he joined the team and for Stepan the goal was his 15th of the season. Brian Boyle was injured in the last game and due to that the Rangers called up Chris Kreider.

The Rangers didn’t get any help from the other teams on Tuesday night. Both the Senators and Islanders won and with the Jets win over the Lighting, the Rangers and the Jets are tied with 46 points. The Rangers do have a game in hand but they don’t have the tiebreaker. The Jets have 20 in regulation time/ OT wins while the Rangers have 17. Martin Biron could get the start tonight and Lundqvist would have a valuable day off before the last push to the playoffs.

Edited 11:55, it seems that Lundqvist will get his 9th consecutive start tonight.

Key players and stats:

After a tricky start to the season, Derek Stepan has been playing the best hockey of his NHL career. He has 15 goals and 20 assists in the season. If the Rangers want to have a long run in the playoffs, they need to get Brad Richards going. He does little things well, he makes good defensive plays but he’s having a hard time to hit the net. He has only 6 goals in the season and the Rangers could really use some offensive help from him. As said, Jonathan Huberdeau has had a tremendous rookie season in the NHL. The Rangers need to look out Brian Campbell on the blueline, he has 6 PP goals in the season. This is the second meeting of the season. The last meeting is on next week in Florida.
