Game 1; We’re shipping up to Boston! 2nd round opens in Boston!

STEPAN

New York Rangers @ Boston Bruins, Game 1 of the EC Semifinals

After a tremendous 5-0 win in the Game 7 against the Washington Capitals, the Rangers are back in business tonight when they open up their 2nd round series against the Boston Bruins at TD Garden. This is the first time since 1973 when the Rangers and the Bruins meet in the post-season. After couple of days off, the both teams are ready to start the series. Lundqvist vs. Rask, Nash and Callahan vs. Seguin and Marchand, you name it. This series will feature hard hitting, excellent goaltending and probably a low scoring games. Are you ready New York?

BOS:

The Bruins were 0:50 seconds away from loss in the Game 7 against the Maple Leafs on Monday night. They didn’t lost that game. Patrice Bergeron tied the game and eventually got the game winning goal in the overtime. The Bruins are a tough team. The guys like Brad Marchand and Milan Lucic will drive you crazy – if you let them. Zdeno Chara is backbone of their defence but they’re battling with some serious injuries in the defence. Andrew Ference is out with Dennis Seidenberg. Douggie Hamilton and Matt Bartkowski are young defence mans and now they will have a chance to show what they can do in the playoffs.

NYR:

Henrik Lundqvist got back to back shutouts in the Game 6 and the 7 against the Caps. If you need to describe his performance in this series; Incredible! And like in the last minute, the Rangers found their offense and they got it from every line. Especially in the Game 7, the line-up looked very balanced and solid. Derick Brassard got 9 points in the 7 games against the Caps and he leads the Rangers in the points. As weird as it sounds, Arron Asham scored more goals than Brad Richards and Rick Nash combined in the series. But as long as your teams scorers – it doesn’t matter who scores!

Checking-line; Pyatt-Boyle-Dorsett is working very well and even the 4th line with Kreider-Richards-Asham is creating scoring chances (and is scoring goals!). The Rangers need to stay patient, play discipline and use their scoring chances well.

Key players and stats:

Henrik Lundqvist is 21-7-2 with 1.67 GAA and .943 save% in his career against the Bruins. Truth is that the Rangers need to get Nash, Callahan and Richards going in this series. They have received a huge offensive boost from Derick Brassard and Mats Zuccarello but they need strong effort from everybody else. Taylor Pyatt and Arron Asham really made a difference in the series against the Caps and if they can continue doing that, the Rangers will be fine. For the Bruins, you always wanna talk about Zdeno Chara. Slovakian giant played over 29 minutes in the Game 7 against the Maple Leafs and with injuries to Dennis Seidenberg and Andrew Ference, he needs to do that every night. Milan Lucic and Brad Marchand will do the dirty work but they’re also scoring goals. Tuukka Rask is very good young Finnish goaltender and he will give the Bruins a chance to win every game.

New York Rangers @ Washington Capitals, Game 2 of the EC Quarterfinals

The Rangers are back in business this afternoon when they face the Washington Capitals in the second game of the series in DC. The Caps won the first one 3-1 and the Rangers are looking for even the series before heading back to Madison Square Garden. Too many penalties made the Rangers pay and they didn’t get their offense going well enough. They need a stronger effort this afternoon and they need to play disciple game in order to shake up the Capitals. Game 2, the Rangers and the Caps!

WSH:

The Caps did scored a power play and surprisingly it was scored by Alex Ovetchkin. That goal tied the game and after that the Caps rallied to 3-1 win on their home ice. What the Caps did? They stayed patient. At the end their power play got it done and shots found there way in. As a little surprise, the Caps played very physical game. Braden Holtby made big saves in the 3rd period and overally played a very good game.

NYR:

The Rangers night didn’t start very well – nor didn’t end well. Just 34 into 1st period the Rangers got too many men on the ice penalty and the Caps jumped to driver’s seat. With a little bit lucky goal by Carl Hagelin, the Rangers took the 1-0 lead in the first. They killed the first three penalties but the forth (Asham’s) was too much. In the spam of 7 minutes, the Caps scored three times and took the game away.

John Moore scored? in the winding minutes of the 3rd period but there wasn’t a clear proof that the puck crossed the goal line. The Rangers won 30 face-offs but they really had a hard time winning those while on the power play. Most of the shots went wide and they didn’t get enough players in front of the net.

I think nobody was expecting a full sweep in the DC but coming back to MSG down 2-0 in the series doesn’t sound very good. The Rangers need to work on the little things and they’ll be fine. Cause only way to win it is to work for it!

Key players and stats:

Carl Hagelin scored his 1st NHL playoff goal while Ovetchkin’s goal was his 32nd career playoff goal. Braden Holtby clearly outplayed Henrik Lundqvist and he awarded with the 1st star of the game. Mats Zuccarello was -2 and he looked a little bit lost on the ice. Nash and Stepan created a few changes but they couldn’t beat Holtby. The Rangers were 0-for-4 on the power play with over minute of 5-on-3. Despite the loss, the Rangers outshooted the Caps 36-30, but most of the shots were easy saves for Holtby.

Let’s GO Rangers!

New York Rangers @ Washington Capitals, Game 1 of the EC Quarterfinals

The Rangers will open up their 2013 post season tonight when they face the Washington Capitals in the Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals. Over the last 5 years, these teams have met four times in the playoffs. In the 2009 and 2011, the Capitals won the series but last year the Rangers beat them in the 7 games. The Rangers won the season series with the record 2-0-1 but the Capitals got one point more in the regular season. Ovetchkin vs. Nash, Holtby vs. Lundqvist, this series is full of great match-ups but only one can win!

WSH:

The Capitals have power in the offense for sure. Alex Ovetckin won the “Maurice Richard Trophy” with 32 goals while Mike Green scored most points as a defenceman. Besides those two, Troy Brouwer scored 19 goals and Mike Ribeiro 13 goals. They also have depth players like Jason Chimera and Eric Fehr. With the 147 goals, the Caps ranked 4th in the league in goals in the regular season.

The Caps defence is built around two players; Mike Green and John Carlson. They both are more offensive oriented D – mans, with big minutes on the power play. That leaves Karl Alzner, John Erskine, Jack Hillen and Steve Oleksy to take care of their own end. Compared to their power play, their penalty kill is much weaker. Getting players like Nash and Stepan on the ice against Hillen/Oleksy or Carlson/Erskine is a key thing for the Rangers.

Last year Braden Holtby surprised everybody and helped his team all the way to the Game 7 against the Rangers. Start to this year wasn’t very good but he stepped up and ended the regular season with .920 SV% and 2.58 GAA in 36 games. If Holtby can play like he did last year, he’s tought to beat.

NYR:

The Rangers are hoping that Marc Staal, Derek Dorsett/Brian Boyle will return to the line-up as soon as possible but on the other hand they have some good chemistry with the current lines. For example, Brad Richards has really improved his game with Zuccarello and Nash. The Rangers rely their offense to Nash and Stepan but they hope that they will get offensive help too from guys like Callahan and Brassard. One thing the Rangers need to use is their speed. Hagelin, Zuccarello and Kreider needs to use their skating to create chances and room for other players like Richards and Stepan.

If you compare the Rangers defence to last year’s roster – you don’t see many changes. John Moore has replaced Stu Bickel in the 3rd pair (which is a huge improvement!) and because of that, the Rangers also have depth in the defence. With McDonagh and Girardi going against the “Ovetchkin-line”, guys like Del Zotto and Moore will probably join the rushes more often. As said, getting Marc Staal would be a huge upgrade for the Rangers.

As said, Braden Holtby is a promising young goaltender but he isn’t the King. Henrik Lundqvist gives the Rangers a chance to win every game in every series. In April, Lundqvist won 10 out of 14 games with .944 SV% and 1.56 GAA.

Key match-ups:

It’s obvious that the Rangers need to stay out of the penalty box. The Caps power play is red hot at the moment. Alex Ovetchkin scored 16 PP goals this season. What is surprising is that the Rangers scored 3 PP goals against the Caps in the season series while the Caps had only 1. The Rangers could really use a few power play goals in this series.

The Rangers need to block shots as usual. Green and Ovetchkin likes to shoot much and it’s vital that Lundqvist sees most of the shots which get through. Last year, Caps scored too many rebound goals. The Rangers  need to get control of their own net.

And last but not the least, the both teams need secondary scoring. At this time of the year, you oddly receive offensive help from your 3rd and 4th liners.

My prediction; Rangers in 6.

Game 48; The last stop before the playoffs!

DEVSNYR
New Jersey Devils (19-18-10) @ New York Rangers (25-18-4)
The Rangers will conclude their 2013 regular season this afternoon against their division rival New Jersey Devils at the MSG. Despite the score of tonight’s game, the Rangers will head to the playoffs while the Devils season will end and they’re ready to start up the summer. A win would put up the Rangers to 6th spot but the Senators still have a game in hand. Hudson River Rivalry on the last day of the regular season with clinched playoff berth – sounds good to me!
NJD:
Too many injuries and offensive struggles made the Devils pay. After a terrific last season with appereance in the Stanley Cup Finals, this year was different. Although the Devils missed the playoffs, they have been playing well lately. They have won 4 out of their last 5 games with only loss coming against the Rangers. For them, this game is not meaningless. They want to beat the Rangers one more time this season. Johan Hedberg will get a start in the season final and he will presumably go against Lundqvist. Remains to be seen how many Devils player will head to the World Championships in Sweden/Finland.
NYR:
The Rangers stayed patient and got some lucky bounces on Thursday night in Raleigh. They started the game very well and Derick Brassard made it 2-0 already in the 1st period. The Canes made a comeback and scored three unanswered goals. Late in the 3rd period, Brad Richards shot from the point found it’s way in and the Rangers tied the game. When the times are tough, who can you trust on – to your captain! Ryan Callahan scored the GWG in the overtime and clinched the Rangers playoff spot.
With the shortened season, things will get tricky. A lot of injuries, tough schedules and players will come and go. After the team went through all those thing, the Rangers did what was needed – they made the playoffs. Sure it wasn’t an easy ride but yes they made it. And now it’s a whole new ballgame. Wheter it’s the Capitals or the Bruins, this team will fight and work in every shift in every game. Cause that’s just how they play and that makes them very tough team to beat – especially in the playoffs.
Key players and stats:
The Rangers need strong efforts from guys like Brad Richards and Ryan Callahan if they wanna have a long run in the playoffs. Good thing is that they are already playing very well. Richards is putting up points and Callahan has showed why he’s the captain in the recent games. Another player who has been playing very well is Mats Zuccarello. He’s confident with the puck, he’s getting points and most of all he makes his linemates better. For the Devils, David Clarkson is their leading scorer with 15 goals. For Ilya Kovalchuk, this shortened season was a big disappointment. He has only 11 goals in 36 games. Surely, this is the last meeting of the season. And this time it ends with Henrik – not Henrique!

Game 46; Last trip to Sunshine State!

20130423-124439.jpg

New York Rangers (24-17-4) @ Florida Panthers (13-26-6)

The Rangers open the last week of regular season tonight when they visit the Florida Panthers. This is the lonely visit to the Sunshine State this season and the Rangers are trying to extend their winning streak to four. After terrible road trip (0-4-0), the Panthers are trying to get back to winning their home ice. With the win tonight and the Jets loss against the Caps, the Rangers will secure their place in the playoffs. 18 goals scored by the Rangers in the last three games – can they keep it up? It’s the New York Rangers Gameday!

FLA:

The Panthers were outscored 21-to-5 in their four game road trip over the last week. They were beaten by the Isles, the Rangers, the Devils and the Bruins. This season was a disaster for the Panthers but their future is looking bright. Guys like Jonathan Huberdeau and Nick Bjugstad will be a big part of teams future. 13 players have made their NHL debuts this season with the Panthers. One thing the Panthers need to figure out is their goaltending situation. Can Jakob Markström or Scott Clemmensen lead the to the playoffs next year?

NYR:

The Rangers extended their winning streak to three on Sunday afternoon when they beat the Devils 4-1. This win also eliminated the Devils from the playoffs so the Rangers got some revenge from last years disappointment. Captain Callahan opened the scoring just 34 seconds into the 1st period and Derek Stepan made it 2-0 after a great play by Ryan McDonagh. Taylor Pyatt extended lead to 3-0 in the 2nd and Callahan got his 14th of the season in the 3rd period. Andrei Loktionov scored the lonely goal for the Devils.

Henrik Lundqvist will get another start tonight and the line-up remains the same. The Rangers have found their scoring and with the way the team is playing at the moment, nobody wants to face them in the 1st round of the playoffs. With the Lundqvist effort alone, the Rangers have a chance to win the series.

Key players and stats:

The Rangers have scored 42 goals in the April (Most in the whole league) and suddenly they are ranked 16th in the goals. Brad Richards was awarded with 2nd star of the week by the NHL and he has 7 points in the last three games including his 1st NHL hat-trick. Derek Stepan now has 40 points in the 45 games this season. Derick Brassard has 9 points in the last 10 games after joining the team. Jonathan Huberdeau scored a highlight reel goal in the teams last meeting and he’s the Panthers most dangerous offensive player. As said, this is the last meeting in the regular season. Both teams have won one contest.

Game 45; Hudson River Rivalry – Round 3 at the Garden!

20130421-130824.jpg

New Jersey Devils (17-17-10) @ New York Rangers (23-17-4)

The Rangers conclude their busy week this afternoon as they host the Devils at the Garden. As the regular season winds down with only 4 games left, this is the first meeting of season between the Rangers and the Devils at the MSG. The Devils won’t make the playoffs this year but they’re ready to spoil the playoff hopes for the Rangers. The Devils beat the Panthers 6-2 yesterday while the Rangers are coming off from great win over the Sabres. Hudson River Rivalry continues!

NJD:

The Devils lost Ilya Kovalchuk and eventually after that they lost 10 games in the row. Last night they got him back and continued winning when they beat the Panthers 6-2. After long playoff run last year, this season has been tough for the Devils. They started the season very well but injuries and offensive struggles made them pay. For example, last week they outshooted the Sens and the Maple Leafs 65 to 24 but lost both games 0-2. Against the Rangers, we can expect almost anything from this team. I wouldn’t be surprised if guys like David Clarkson and Ryan Carter are trying to get something going on with Clowe/Asham.

NYR:

The Rangers have scored 14 goals in the last two games. Yeah, you read it right. Game against the Sabres was pivotal but surely nobody expected this outcome. After 898 games in the league, Brad Richards finally got his 1st NHL hat-trick. In addition, Carl Hagelin, Rick Nash, Anton Stralman, Ryan Clowe and Ryan Callahan scored for the Rangers. The win eliminated the Sabres and the Flyers from the playoffs.

With 4 games left almost anything can still happen. The Rangers are 3 points behind 6th place Islanders and 2 points behind the 7th place Sens. Lundqvist will continue playing and the line-up remains the same. The main goal for the Rangers is get in to the playoffs and after that they can worry about the seeding. They can’t clinch the playoff spot today but if they do win – that’s a huge step towards the playoffs.

Key players and stats:

Good thing for the Rangers is that Brad Richards is getting the points. He has 10 goals in the season with 4 goals in the last two games. Although the Rangers gave up 4 goals against the Sabres, Henrik Lundqvist is playing very well. If he can continue playing like this, the Rangers can beat any team in the league. For the Devils, Martin Brodeur usually plays his best games against the Rangers. Although their overall record is pretty weak, they have guys who can score goals (Belive it or not!) David Clarkson has 14 goals in the season while Patrik Elias has 13. This is the third of four meetings this season. Teams will close-up their regular seasons on April 27th at the Madison Square Garden.

Game 39; The Rangers concludes the road trip, trying to catch the Maple Leafs!

Boyle

New York Rangers (19-15-4) @ Toronto Maple Leafs (21-13-4)

The Rangers will conclude their three game road trip tonight when they visit the Toronto Maple Leafs at the Air Canada Center. The Maple Leafs are 4 points ahead of the Rangers but the back to back games between the teams can change that. The Rangers are looking for the points in fourth consecutive game while the Maple Leafs are trying to start up the winning streak. The Original Six match-up with both teams currently at the playoffs spots – this should be a good one!

TOR:

With just three weeks left in the regular season, the Toronto Maple Leafs are in the position they haven’t been in a long time – in the playoff spot. But they still have a long road ahead of them. The Senators, the Rangers and the Islanders are lurking right behind them and even the Devils could crash their playoff dreams. The Maple Leafs will meet the Rangers twice and the other contenders once. Their most dangerous offensive player this season hasn’t been Phil Kessel. 22-year-old Nazem Kadri has scored 17 goals and has 22 assists. The Maple Leafs tried to get Finnish veteran goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff on the trade deadline but he decided to stay in Calgary. James Reimer has been their starting goaltender this season.

NYR:

It’s amazing how much four games can have effect to the team and especially to the fans. Starting April with the record 3-0-1 and getting 3 out of 4 points against the Pens, have made a difference for this team. Slowly, the conversation has changed from making the playoffs to which seed the team will be when the real game starts. After a great road win in Carolina, the Rangers have 10 games left in the regular season. They have still have a change to make the 5th seed in the conference with just 2 points behind the Maple Leafs.

Henrik Lundqvist was seemingly tired after playing back to back games on weekend. Biron could get the start tonight while Hank would be back in the Wednesday night – well rested!

Key players and stats:

The Rangers first line is really clicking! All three forwards; Nash, Stepan and Callahan scored in the Carolina. After the trade deadline, Brian Boyle has been a different person. Boyle had 1 goal and 1 assist in his 31 games this season while in the last three games he has 1+2. Like against the Hurricanes, Lundqvist has found his game. In the last 10 games he is 6-2-2 with 1.57 GAA and 94,5 SV%. For the Maple Leafs, they have talent in offense. Kadri, Van Riemsdyk and Kessel will make sure that the Rangers defence needs to be ready tonight. Following tonight’s game the teams will meet on Wednesday night at the MSG.

Game 36; The Rangers are ready for the Penguin hunt!

Penguins_Rangers_Hockey_JPEG_06 (1)

Pittsburgh Penguins (28-9-0) @ New York Rangers (17-15-3)

The Rangers are back in business tonight when they host their division rival Pittsburgh Penguins at the MSG. One team sitting comfortably at the 1st place of the conference against the one fighting for the last playoff spots. That’s the tonight’s game in the nutshell. The Penguins play without Sidney Crosby but Jarome Iginla, Jegveni Malkin and James Neal will make sure that the Rangers defence is busy tonight. Can Derek Stepan and the others answer? The Rangers and the Penguins – Enjoy!

PIT:

As said the Penguins are without Sidney Crosby, who got hit by the puck in Saturday’s game against the Islanders. Crosby had a jaw surgery and he will be out indefinitely. Reports says that he’s probably back when the playoffs starts. In addition to that, the Penguins are also missing their two key defense-man. Kris Letang has a broken toe and Paul Martin has broken bone is his hand and will miss 4-5 weeks. Still this team is packed with offensive power. Iginla, Malkin, Neal, Kunitz – you name it. Tomas Vokoun has played very good lately and will probably start against the Rangers. The Penguins 15-game winning streak came to it’s end last night when they were beaten by the Buffalo Sabres 4-1.

NYR:

After returning to the MSG, it took 19 seconds for the Rangers to score a goal. Ryan Callahan pass found Derek Stepan and he didn’t missed it. But almost right away, the Jets answered with the goal from ex-Ranger Nik Antropov. 13 minutes into the 1st, Zach Bogosian slapshot beat Henrik Lundqvist and suddenly the Jets lead the game 2-1. But after that it was all about the Rangers. Old saying goes that if you survive the 5-on-3 penalty kill, you get the momentum of the game and was just what they did. Captain Callahan’s amazing shorthanded goal tied the game and in the 3rd period Stepan striked again. Rick Nash made it 4-2 with beautiful wrist shot.

If the Canadiens are known as a tough team for the Rangers, so is the Penguins. The Rangers have lost 7 consecutive games against them, including all 3 contests this season. The last two meetings have both ended 3-0 to the Penguins. Lundqvist and the Rangers have a big game ahead of them tonight. The Islanders are playing great and the Capitals are right behind them in the standings.

Ryane Clowe is the latest New York Ranger. The Rangers gave up 2nd and 3rd round picks in 2013 draft and conditional 2nd round pick in 2014 draft. Clowe has 0 goals and 11 assists in the 28 games with the San Jose Sharks this season. He has played his entirely NHL career with the Sharks.

Key players and stats:

The Rangers need a big game from Henrik Lundqvist tonight. Besides the tight defence, they need to figure out how to beat Tomas Vokoun/Fleury in the net. There is no need for the stupid penalties – the Penguins PP is ranked 3rd (23,4%) in the league. Jarome Iginla scored his 1st goal as a Penguin yesterday and he’s always dangerous on the ice. Still not sure if Ryane Clowe plays tonight but if he does, he will bring toughness to the Rangers line-up. This is the 4th of 5 meetings this season but the teams will meet again on Friday night in the Pittsburgh.

Let’s Go Rangers!

2013 Rangers Season Preview

After a 113 day owner imposed lockout, the New York Rangers are itching to get back on the ice to prove last year’s surprise performance that netted them their first 50 win season and first division title in 18 years was not a fluke.  Analysts predicted the 2011-12 Rangers to finish somewhere between the middle of the pack in the Eastern Conference to outside of the top eight after a disappointing exit out of the 2011 playoffs at the hands of Alex Ovechkin and their hated rivals the Washington Capitals.  But from day one of last season, Coach John Tortorella preached hard work and dedication to his defensive system and the results far exceeded anyone’s expectations.  The Rangers shocked us all by not only winning the Atlantic Division but coming within one point of winning the President’s Trophy. And in the playoffs the club won two playoff rounds in the same postseason for the first time in 15 years.

Simply put, the 2012-13 Rangers will not be able to sneak up on anybody.  They made headlines last April and May by winning two gritty seven game series against the Ottawa Senators and the Washington Capitals before succumbing to their cross river rivals, the New Jersey Devils, in another hard fought six games.  The Rangers seemed to run out of gas by the end of the Devils series but it was not in the Rangers nature to use fatigue as an excuse.  Coach Tortorella refused to believe that the loss to the Devils was due to his players being beaten and sometimes broken over the 20 games that they played in the playoffs.  But it was hard to believe that the Rangers were not affected by the fact that they had gone the max in the first two rounds in two very tough series.  A playoff record of 10-10 left the entire organization wanting for more in 2013.

The Rangers continued to make headlines in the offseason as Henrik Lundqvist won the Vezina Trophy, awarded to the league’s best goaltender.  He was the first Ranger to win the award since John Vanbiesbrouck won it in 1985-86.  Lundqvist’s career best 39 wins were second most in Rangers history to Mike Richter’s 42.  King Henrik was also nominated for the Hart Trophy and the Lester B. Pearson Award, two trophies that honor the league’s Most Valuable Player.  However, to no one’s surprise those trophies went to Evgeny Malkin, who led the Penguins to the playoffs in Sidney Crosby’s absence last season.

In July, the Rangers said goodbye to key role players Ruslan Fedotenko, Brandon Prust and John Mitchell and welcomed Taylor Pyatt, Arron Asham and Jeff Halpern via free agency to New York.  Then on July 24th, the Rangers pulled the trigger on their biggest trade since Glen Sather acquired Jaromir Jagr in February, 2004.  After a six month flirtation with Columbus, the Rangers finally added former 40 goal scorer and All Star Rick Nash to the club in return for homegrown Ranger centers Brandon Dubinsky and Artem Anisimov, top defense prospect Tim Erixon and a first round pick in 2013.  The Rangers also received a conditional third round pick and minor league defenseman Steve Delisle in the deal.

The Rangers feel with the addition of Nash and the full recovery from shoulder labrum surgery by Marion Gaborik they possess two of the top five goal scorers in the league.  There is hope that the goal scoring drought that plagued the Rangers throughout the postseason should now be solved.  There is also hope that Chris Kreider will also contribute greatly to the Rangers offense as he will be with the Rangers in the regular season for the first time.

Coaching – Tortorella returns behind the Rangers bench to start his fourth full season at Madison Square Garden.  He was originally hired to replace Tom Renney in February, 2008 and has won 145 of the 267 games he has coached for the Blueshirts.  Those 145 wins are good for fifth all-time in Rangers history.  Tortorella has won a Stanley Cup with the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2003-04 and has also coached an AHL team, the Rochester Americans, to the Calder Cup back in 1995-96.  The coach is known as an abrasive coach but his style suits the Rangers at this time.  They are a tough, blue collar group that blocks a lot of shots and forechecks opponents relentlessly.  In fact, the forecheck and counterattack were the keys to the Rangers success in 2011-12.  And opponents should expect more of the same from a more talented Rangers squad in 2013.  Tortorella will again be assisted by bench coach Mike Sullivan and goaltending coach Benoit Allaire.

Forwards – The addition of Rick Nash will change the dynamic of the Eastern Conference’s best team for the upcoming season.  Nash should immediately make the Rangers a more dangerous team on the power play as well as at even strength.  Teams will no longer be able to throw a checking line out against a Gaborik line or a Callahan line when the Rangers could roll three lines with three different right wingers capable of scoring 30-plus goals.  Chances are either Gaborik or Nash will move over to the left side but the Rangers now have more scoring depth than they have had in a very long time.  Most seem to think that Nash will immediately be paired with Brad Richards to start the season.  But with Gaborik having fully healed from shoulder surgery the Rangers have options on the wings for the top two lines.  The top six forwards should be Nash, Richards, Gaborik, Kreider, center Derek Stepan and winger Ryan Callahan.  Throw in winger Carl Hagelin and the Rangers have seven forwards capable of playing on the top two lines at any time.  Any combination of those seven will be difficult to defend.

On the checking line, the Rangers hope that Hagelin continues to develop as a defensive forward and penalty killer as well as a scorer.  There is also hope that center Brian Boyle will rediscover the scoring touch that netted him 20 goals in 2010-11.  Last year’s offensive slump did not affect Boyle’s ability to make plays and check opponents’ best lines.  Boyle did a great job all year long as the Rangers primary checking center.  Boyle and Hagelin will most likely be joined by Taylor Pyatt, who arrives from Phoenix with a lot of size and ability.

On primarily what will be a fourth line, the Rangers expect more out of Mike Rupp, who was hampered by a knee injury that lingered throughout the season last year.  They also added Halpern, a well respected faceoff specialist, as well as Asham for grit and toughness.  Asham is the type of player that most fans of opposing teams hate but love when he is a member of their team.  The Rangers are hoping he becomes a fan favorite as quickly as former Ranger Brandon Prust did when he first arrived on the scene.

Providing depth for the forwards are new additions Michael Haley and Brandon Segal, who have seen a lot of ice time down with the AHL’s Connecticut Whale, as well as rookies J.T. Miller, Christian Thomas and Marek Hrivik, who have yet to take the ice at the NHL level.

Defensemen – This unit became one of the NHL’s best in 2011-12 when Ryan McDonagh and All-Star selection Dan Girardi really stepped up to become one of the league’s best pairings.  While former first round pick Marc Staal was recovering from post-concussion syndrome McDonagh and Girardi stepped up their game and became the Rangers their best pairing since Brian Leetch and Jeff Beukeboom patrolled the Garden ice in the mid-1990s.  Staal returned in January to play in last year’s Winter Classic and regained his form within a couple of weeks.  He was joined by Anton Stralman and formed a solid second pairing from early spring through the playoffs.

Another first round pick, Michael Del Zotto, rebounded from an underachieving sophomore season to find a new dimension to his game and really was one of the better players on the Rangers for long stretches of last season.  Del Zotto’s skating and puck moving abilities were key assets for the Rangers as he limited turnovers in the defensive zone.  His game has transitioned from more of an offensive minded defenseman to a very solid two-way blueliner.  Armed with a new two year contract, the hope is that Del Zotto continues to grow both offensively and defensively.

Also returning to the Rangers are free agent defensemen Stu Bickel, Mike Eminger and Matt Gilroy. Both Bickel and Eminger played in over 40 games for the Rangers last year and performed well enough to crack the lineup as sixth defensemen.  However, you have to question how much Coach Tortorella trusts either player as Bickel averaged only 5:10 per game in the postseason and Eminger only 6:49 of ice time.  Gilroy rejoins the Rangers after a 2011-12 season split between Tampa Bay and Ottawa.  He has been playing in Hartford and had six goals and nine assists but was a terrible -16 in 34 games for the Whale since October. The defense seemed to wear down as the playoffs went on because of the large amounts of ice time that the top four were getting each night.  This may be an area that the Rangers want to look at to get better.

Unfortunately it has recently been announced that defenseman Mike Sauer will miss the entire 2012-13 season because he is still suffering from symptoms of post concussion syndrome.  Sauer was injured in December, 2011 and missed the remainder of the 2011-12 season with those same symptoms.  The Rangers will hold out hope that he will make a full recovery and be part of the club for the 2013-14 season.

Providing depth in Hartford are veterans Sean Collins and Mike Vernace as well as rookie defenseman Dylan McIlrath, who was a first round pick in 2010.  A lot of is expected of McIlrath as he enters his first season as a pro.  His presence has been immediately felt on the AHL level and he could join the big club by late April if his defensive game is as sound as the Rangers would like it to be by then.

Goaltenders – You can make the argument that the Rangers have not had a better goaltender tandem than they have now since the stretch of 1994-97 when Mike Richter and Glenn Healy patrolled the crease at MSG for the Rangers.  Henrik Lundqvist was the team Most Valuable Player last season for the sixth consecutive season.  It is the first time in Rangers history that the award, that is voted on by the Professional Hockey Writers Association, has been given to a player for six seasons in a row.  Very few outside of Los Angeles would argue that King Henrik was the best goaltender in the regular season last year.  His numbers were staggering.  39 wins, 8 shutouts, a 1.97 goals against average and a .930 save percentage were all among league leaders in 2011-12.  Only LA’s Jonathan Quick could be talked about in the same breath as Lundqvist in 2011-12.  And Quick was the one holding the Cup at end of the season last year.

Backing Hank up is the very capable Martin Biron, who re-signed with the Rangers in the offseason for two more years.  His 20 wins over the last two years are the most by a Rangers backup since Healy posted 22 in 1995-97.  Biron will again be relied up to play about 20-25% of the games this season to keep Henrik fresh for what the Rangers hope is a very deep run into the playoffs in 2013.

Intangibles – The Rangers special teams were both a help and a hindrance during the 2011-12 season.  The fifth ranked penalty kill was very effective and helped the team rank third overall in goals against during the season.  The strong penalty kill led by Captain Ryan Callahan also had 8 shorthanded goals which ranked sixth in the NHL.  But for as good as the penalty kill was the power play was equally as bad.  This area has been the club’s achillies heel the last few years.  The Rangers have gotten progressively worse dropping from 13th in the league in 2009-10 to 18th in 2010-11  to 23rd last year.    The decline was inexplicable really with the addition of Brad Richards, who has always excelled throughout his career with the man advantage, the finishing abilities of Gaborik and Callahan and the passing abilities of Stepan and Del Zotto.

In 2012-13, the expectation will be that the power play will be much better with the addition of Nash.   Surprisingly, Nash has not been a superstar on the power play but he also has not been playing with the talented group of players that the Rangers have at their disposal.  Nash has only had 10, 6 and 6 goals the last three years on the PP.  The Rangers hope that the power play unit will gel quickly because they will need to score more goals with the man advantage in order to have success in 2013.

The fear in trading away Brandon Dubinsky and Artem Anisimov while allowing Ruslan Fedotenko and Brandon Prust to leave as free agents is that the penalty kill will take a step backwards.  However, with Callahan, Stepan, Boyle, Pyatt and Hagelin to go along with Richards, Nash and Kreider who can all kill penalties, the Rangers should not lose much in the way of defense when they are a man down.

Expectations – It appears that the pieces are in place for the Rangers to make a long run into the playoffs and win their first Stanley Cup in 19 years.  They have added scoring and grit at forward and more playoff experience to the lineup.  They will have Rick Nash and Chris Kreider for the full 48 game schedule learning and playing in Coach Tortorella’s system.  I believe the only question marks for the team will be: Will Nash be as good as advertised? Will Gaborik regain the form he had before shoulder surgery? Will the penalty kill hold up with new personnel?  And can the Rangers stay healthy enough during this short sprint of a season to overcome their quality of depth issues at forward and defense?

The Rangers will have heavy competition for the division and conference titles from Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Boston, and Washington.  I also think Florida, Carolina and Buffalo will be improved as well.  They will be tested by a road leaning schedule in March and April that has them playing 17 of their last 29 games on the road.  On more than one occasion, the schedule has the Rangers travelling to play four games in four different cities in 8 days.  Even though the travel in the East is typically shorter, that is a lot of travel in a short period of time for the hockey club.

I am not one to make predictions for fear of jinxing the team but I do believe this is the best Rangers team in a long while and I do believe they match up well with every team in the East.  However,  I still feel like they may be one defensive forward, one stabilizing defenseman away from making another long run into the playoffs.  Something just feels missing from this set of forwards and defensemen, especially with the subtraction of Dubinsky, Anisimov and Prust.  They also have not really answered the question of who to play with Del Zotto.  If the Rangers can make a couple of additions or a couple of players emerge to fill those roles and the team feels comfortable rolling at least three, if not, all four lines and all six defensemen consistently, the sky is the limit for this hockey club in 2013.
